Blue Eye Samurai first launched last year and quickly became a favorite, with critics praising both the story and the animation. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the show with a 97% score and an average rating of 8.3 out of 10. The site describes it as “Visually dazzling while paying deft attention to character, Blue Eye Samurai is a masterfully rendered animated adventure.”
Set in 17th-century Japan during the Edo period, the series follows Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine. She is a half-Japanese, half-white warrior with one goal in mind: revenge. Her father abandoned her and took her mother away, leaving Mizu scarred and determined.
Forced to hide her identity as a child by pretending to be a boy, she carries that disguise into adulthood while hunting the four white men who remained in Japan after the country closed its borders.
The first season ended with a major twist. Mizu crossed paths with Irish smuggler Abijah Fowler, played by Kenneth Branagh. Fowler revealed the locations of two more of her targets, this time in London.
To keep her quest alive, Mizu spared Fowler’s life and agreed to use his connections to travel overseas. Season two will follow her as she heads beyond Japan, continuing her journey of vengeance.
Alongside Mizu, the show’s cast includes George Takei as Seki, Princess Akemi’s tutor, Masi Oka as Ringo, a handless cook who travels with Mizu, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the blind swordsmith Eiji, Brenda Song as Princess Akemi, Darren Barnet as swordsman Taigen, Randall Park as Heiji Shindo, and Kenneth Branagh as Fowler.
Producer Jane Wu revealed during the Anime NYC panel that the action in season two will be even more realistic. The team is using live-action stunt performers for motion reference to make the sword fights feel sharper and more grounded.
Director John Aoshima will also lead at least one of the six episodes. According to the creators, the story has been mapped out across three seasons, so fans can expect a full arc from beginning to end.
Blue Eye Samurai season two is set to release in 2026, and Netflix promises it will raise the stakes for Mizu’s story. With the first look already out, the next chapter of her bloody quest for revenge is officially on the way.
