Netflix’s ambitious sci-fi series 3 Body Problem is continuing to move forward, as a new production update has revealed when work on Season 3 is expected to begin.

While fans are still waiting for Season 2, new reports suggest that cameras for the third season are scheduled to start rolling in Hungary in June. Production is reportedly expected to continue through the rest of the year, with the current plan aiming for a 2027 release window.

The series, created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, is based on the famous science fiction novels by Liu Cixin. Since its debut in 2024, the show has been one of Netflix’s most expensive productions, reportedly costing around $20 million per episode.

Despite the massive budget and strong attention before release, the first season reportedly struggled to become a breakout hit for Netflix. The series spent several weeks on the platform’s global charts but did not reach the same level of viewership as some of Netflix’s other major originals. Even so, the show received strong reviews from critics and built a loyal fanbase among science fiction viewers.

Netflix later confirmed that the story would continue with two additional seasons. However, reports have suggested that Season 2 may feature fewer episodes than the first season.

Production on Season 2 has already wrapped. Filming reportedly took place in Hungary between August 2025 and January 2026. The upcoming season is currently expected to arrive sometime in 2026, although Netflix has not officially announced an exact release date yet.

Interestingly, earlier reports claimed that Seasons 2 and 3 could be filmed back-to-back. At the time, there was no official confirmation from Netflix regarding those plans. Now, new production information points to Season 3 entering active filming shortly after a short break following Season 2’s completion.

Of course, schedules can still change. Since Netflix has not publicly confirmed the exact production timeline, there is still a possibility that filming could continue into early 2027, which may also affect the final release window.

Netflix clearly still believes in 3 Body Problem despite the mixed performance of Season 1. The streaming service usually moves on quickly from expensive projects that do not connect with audiences, so renewing the show for two more seasons says a lot. The series may not be a mainstream hit, but it has built a strong following among sci-fi fans who want bigger and more complex stories on television. What do you think about the future of 3 Body Problem? Are you excited for Seasons 2 and 3, or did the first season not fully work for you? Share your thoughts in the comments.
