Sony Pictures is in talks with Netflix to create an animated sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The original film became a cultural phenomenon, and the deal comes as the fantasy musical climbs to the top of Netflix’s most-watched English-language films of all time.

The film, directed by first-time feature director Maggie Kang, has exceeded expectations. Netflix recently released a surprise sing-along version of the movie in theaters over the August 22–24 weekend.

In addition, KPop Demon Hunters has become the streamer’s most-watched English-language movie ever, with 236 million total views, surpassing Dwayne Johnson’s Red Notice.

“As word of mouth spread and social media caught on, we saw viewing really take off and the movie became a cultural phenomenon — it’s one of the only films to grow its audiences in its fifth and sixth weeks of release,” Netflix head of film Dan Lin told THR.

The film’s soundtrack is also making history, becoming the first to place four songs simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10, led by Huntrix’s “Golden.”

Sources say Sony and Netflix have been working well together on the project. Netflix animation head Hannah Minghella has a long history with Sony, including collaboration with Sony Animation head Kristine Belson.

“We’re thrilled to be supporting Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans and Kristine Belson and her team at Sony Animation as our studio partner,” Lin said in a statement to THR.

Some industry insiders say Sony may have missed out by giving Netflix the film, arguing it could have been a major theatrical success on its own. “It was certainly a mistake for Sony to give it up,” one source on the exhibitor side said.

“Sounds like this was new IP, they didn’t think it would land and was just bad luck for them.” Others say the decision was smart, considering original animation has struggled at the box office in recent years.

While Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans have hinted publicly about a sequel, there is no deal yet. Sources say Sony and Netflix must finalize the first pact before a sequel can move forward. “Netflix cannot make a sequel without Sony, and Sony cannot make a sequel without Netflix,” insiders said.

KPop Demon Hunters continues to dominate the conversation, and both studios appear eager to explore what comes next for the franchise.
