Jane Austen’s most famous novel has never really gone away. ‘Pride and Prejudice’ has been adapted for television and film so many times that every generation seems to get its own Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Netflix is the latest to take up the challenge, and it is doing so with a cast that reads like a who’s who of British drama.

The streamer first teased the project earlier this year, then revealed first-look photos and a release date in September. A new poster asked whether fans were ardently waiting and promised that a trailer would follow the next day. Now it has arrived.

Netflix has released the first full trailer for its ‘Pride and Prejudice’ limited series, a 2-minute-and-19-second look at its Regency world. It opens, fittingly, with the famous line about a truth universally acknowledged, and it introduces Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. All 6 episodes arrive on Netflix on December 3.

Netflix describes the series as a faithful, classic adaptation. It was written by Dolly Alderton, the author behind ‘Everything I Know About Love’, and directed by Euros Lyn, best known for ‘Heartstopper’. Lookout Point, a BBC Studios company, produces.

Alderton, Lyn and Corrin also serve as executive producers, alongside Laura Lankester, Will Johnston and Louise Mutter, with Lisa Osborne producing. The role marks Corrin’s debut as an executive producer. The six-episode format gives the story far more room than the 2005 film, which had to fit the novel into a single feature.

Corrin, a Golden Globe winner for ‘The Crown’ and star of ‘Nosferatu’, plays Elizabeth. Lowden, a SAG Award nominee for ‘Slow Horses’, plays the proud Mr. Darcy, stepping into the role Matthew Macfadyen played in 2005. Olivia Colman is Mrs. Bennet, a part previously played by Brenda Blethyn, and Rufus Sewell plays Mr. Bennet, a role once held by Donald Sutherland.

The Bennet family is filled out by Freya Mavor as Jane, Rhea Norwood as Lydia, Hopey Parish as Mary and Hollie Avery as Kitty. Jamie Demetriou plays Mr. Collins, Daryl McCormack is Mr. Bingley, Louis Partridge is Mr. Wickham and Siena Kelly is Caroline Bingley. Fiona Shaw joins as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

The footage places the 5 Bennet sisters in a world of balls, country estates and family scandal. According to Netflix’s synopsis, the sisters must navigate love, family and society’s expectations as wealthy bachelors arrive in their neighborhood. Jane falls for the charming Mr. Bingley, while Elizabeth clashes with his proud friend Mr. Darcy.

The opening image, a golden-lit country house surrounded by trees, sets a classic tone. The trailer leans on the tension between its two leads, which has been called poetic and enigmatic in early reactions. The pairing has also drawn extra attention because Lowden has been heavily rumored to be the next James Bond, though that has not been confirmed.

Austen adaptations are judged by their leads, and Corrin and Lowden carry the weight of comparisons to some of the best-known performances in period drama. Netflix has paired them with an unusually deep supporting cast, which suggests the series wants to give the whole family room to breathe. Colman’s Mrs. Bennet, in particular, sits at the comic and emotional heart of the household.

The release date also puts the show in a competitive season, as it lands on December 3 just before the holiday period. That placement suggests Netflix expects the series to be a cozy binge for viewers who want a romance. A period drama with a single release day tends to become a conversation-starter.

For fans, the main question is whether this adaptation can find its own identity. The trailer suggests a version that respects the source while giving the Bennets a fresh spark. We will find out in a little more than a month.
