Fans of the Avatar world just got something exciting. A brand new poster for the upcoming movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has been released, and it gives us our first official look at Varang, a new and important character in the story.

At the same time, the movie’s first trailer will only be shown in theaters this weekend alongside The Fantastic Four: First Steps, so fans who want an early peek will need to head to the cinema.

Varang is played by Oona Chaplin, known for her role in Game of Thrones. She’s set to play a major part in the film as the leader of the “Ash People,” a group of Na’vi who live near volcanoes.

Director James Cameron explained a bit about her, saying “Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She’s hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil.” This was shared in an interview quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. The poster shows Varang standing in front of lava and dark volcanic rocks, hinting at the harsh world she comes from.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third movie in the Avatar series. It’s directed and produced by James Cameron, who also helped write the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The story itself was created by Cameron, Jaffa, Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. The movie is being made by 20th Century Studios.

The movie will bring back familiar faces like Sam Worthington as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri. Sigourney Weaver returns too, along with Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Giovanni Ribisi, and others. New actors like David Thewlis will also appear in this film, playing new Na’vi characters.

Filming for Fire and Ash started years ago in New Zealand, back in 2017, alongside Avatar: The Way of Water. It took more than three years to finish filming. The release date has been pushed back several times, according to Variety, but it’s now set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.

This movie is just one part of a bigger plan. Two more Avatar movies are expected after this one, with release dates currently planned for 2029 and 2031. But James Cameron has said before that their future depends on how well the next movies do at the box office.

In his words from a 2017 interview shared by Empire, “Let’s face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don’t make enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5.” Actor David Thewlis confirmed this in 2018, saying “They’re making 2 and 3, they’re gonna see if people go and see them, and then they’ll make 4 and 5.”

For now, though, fans can look forward to meeting Varang in theaters later this year, and get a first real look at her in the new poster. And if you’re eager to see the first footage from Avatar: Fire and Ash, be sure to catch the exclusive trailer playing only in theaters this weekend with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
