New ‘Big Bang Theory’ Spin-Off To Center on Stuart’s Multiverse Mishap
HBO Max is diving back into the world of The Big Bang Theory, and this time, things are getting weird. The streaming service has officially greenlit a brand-new spinoff, and it’s going to follow one of the show’s most unlikely characters: Stuart.
Yes, the quiet comic book store guy is now the lead of his own show, and things are getting chaotic fast. According to Variety, the series is called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and the story is all about Stuart accidentally breaking a device made by Sheldon and Leonard. That mistake opens up a multiverse disaster, and now Stuart has to fix reality itself. No pressure.
Helping him out are some familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory. Kevin Sussman is back as Stuart, joined by Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert the geologist, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke. Together, they’ll be trying to clean up the mess, while also bumping into alternate versions of characters fans already know and love.
The show is coming from the minds of Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn. All three are executive producers, and they’re clearly not afraid to take big swings this time. HBO Max’s content chief Casey Bloys said, “We’re excited to be continuing the legacy of ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn’t be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team.”
Chuck Lorre explained his approach pretty simply: “I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ would have loved, hated, and argued about.”
Zak Penn had a more unusual take, joking about how he got involved: “I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from ‘Big Bang Theory’ would watch. I couldn’t resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out.” He added that the team found Bill Prady “frozen in a block of arctic ice” and brought him on board too.
Bill Prady also shared his thoughts, saying, “The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I’m certain that joy will come through the screen. Putting characters we loved from ‘The Big Bang Theory’ into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.”
This new show marks the fourth entry in the Big Bang Theory universe. The original show ran for 12 seasons on CBS. Its prequel, Young Sheldon, ended in 2024 after seven seasons. Another spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, premiered later that year. But this Stuart-led series will be the first to lean heavily into science fiction, with Lorre teasing major visual effects.
“There’s a lot of CGI,” Lorre said during a panel in June. “There’s a lot of special technical stuff that, you know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy.”
He admitted he’s out of his element, but that’s the whole point. “I was hoping to do something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.”
Warner Bros. Television Group’s Channing Dungey added, “Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ and we can’t wait to see the universe continue with this new series. With the help of Zak, a masterful storyteller, this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist.”
There’s no premiere date yet, but the series is moving forward fast. And if it lives up to its premise, fans can expect something wild, funny, and totally different from anything the Big Bang world has done before.
