New Clear Look at Ramrod Emerges from the Set of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Marvel villain reveals have become something of an art form in themselves, often trickling out through blurry set photos and brief trailer flashes long before a film’s official marketing catches up. That slow drip of information has defined much of the buildup to Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man outing, and one of its more obscure antagonists is finally coming into clearer focus.
Rumors have circulated for months that actor Billy Clements would be taking on the role of Ramrod, a deep-cut Marvel villain who first debuted in the comics as an enemy of Daredevil before eventually crossing paths with Spider-Man.
Fans got their first fleeting glimpse of the character back in June, when a brief TV spot showed a metallic-armed figure charging toward Spider-Man in a scene that directly recreated the cover of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ number 221, the 1981 issue titled “The Rage of Ramrod.”
That earlier footage lasted barely a second, leaving most of Ramrod’s actual design a mystery. Now, a new set photo has surfaced offering a far more detailed look at the character, showing off a heavily armored build that leans into the comic version’s cybernetic construction worker origins, with metallic shoulder plating and forearm guards paired against a more grounded, exposed torso.
In the caption, he revealed that much of Ramrod’s material was cut because the movie had to be shortened, but he’s still grateful to have been part of the film. He also said he trained for two hours a day to portray Ramrod accurately and thanked Eddie Hall, Marvel Studios, Ryan Reynolds, and everyone involved for the opportunity.
The design leans into a rugged, industrial aesthetic that fits neatly with Ramrod’s comic book backstory as a former construction crew boss who was transformed into a powerful cyborg enforcer after a workplace accident. In the source material, that transformation gave him enhanced strength, speed, and durability, all without needing any elaborate scheming, since Ramrod has always been more of a straightforward, smash-first kind of villain.
Given how brief his earlier trailer appearance was, many had speculated Ramrod would serve as little more than a quick obstacle within a larger action sequence rather than a significant standalone threat.
That theory lines up with expectations that Ramrod appears as part of a fast-paced opening montage showing how Spider-Man has spent the four years since ‘No Way Home’ protecting New York on his own. Reports have suggested that the sequence also includes brief nods to other lower-tier villains like Boomerang and Tarantula, each staged as visual homages to their own classic comic book covers.
That pattern reflects director Destin Daniel Cretton’s broader approach to the film’s villain reveals, which has consistently favored quick, comic-accurate visual callbacks over lengthy exposition for its more obscure antagonists. Recreating specific iconic cover art for characters like Ramrod gives longtime readers a fun bit of recognition, even while casual viewers might not clock the reference at all.
With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ still generating steady buzz around every new piece of released footage, this latest look at Ramrod adds one more small but satisfying detail for fans tracking the film’s growing rogues’ gallery. Whether the character ends up playing a larger role than his brief trailer appearance suggested remains to be seen once the film is fully available to audiences everywhere.
