New Details Revealed About the ‘Buffy’ Star’s Death at 54

New information has come out about the death of Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for playing Xander on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He passed away at the age of 54.

According to PEOPLE, Brendon was found by a longtime friend who had been helping take care of him. Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner said Brendon was discovered “positioned as if asleep.” The friend’s identity was not shared.

“The decedent resided alone and was discovered by a longtime friend who had been staying overnight to provide care,” Zeiner explained. “Evidence indicated the time of death was very recent. Investigators are reviewing recently posted videos as potential evidence of prior illness.”

The coroner confirmed there is no suspicion of foul play, and that the scene showed nothing to suggest his death was anything other than natural. Toxicology and final autopsy results are still pending.

Brendon’s family shared the news of his passing on Instagram on March 20. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement read. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”

The family described Brendon as “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.” They acknowledged his past health issues but said they were optimistic about his future at the time of his death. Brendon had spoken publicly in 2023 about a heart attack and a congenital heart defect. He had also undergone spinal procedures and struggled with mental health and substance use issues.

“Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support,” the statement concluded.
