New ‘Dune: Part Three’ Look at Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan Teases Court Intrigue Ahead of the Final Chapter
Few franchises have built anticipation as carefully as Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ trilogy. After two films that turned Frank Herbert’s dense sci-fi epic into a global box office event, the director is preparing to close the story with ‘Dune: Part Three’, which hits theaters on December 18.
The final chapter adapts ‘Dune Messiah’ and picks up 17 years after the events of the second film, with Paul Atreides now a ruthless emperor facing the consequences of his rise. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya return alongside Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson and Javier Bardem, with Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan sitting at the center of the political drama.
That is where a new image comes in. Empire has released an exclusive new look at Pugh as Irulan, showing her in a dark hooded outfit with a veiled figure beside her, standing in a pale, columned hall that hints at the quiet scheming at the heart of the imperial court.

Irulan’s role has grown in importance. At the end of the previous film, Paul married her to gain political power, while Chani rode off alone into the desert, setting up the fractured emotional core of the new movie. Empire’s December issue promises an interview with Pugh about Empress Irulan’s political machinations, which suggests the character will be much more active this time.
The new image fits that tone. Rather than the ceremonial regalia of a princess, Irulan appears composed and guarded, wrapped in layers of dark fabric, which matches the film’s more tense, closed-in feel.
This isn’t the first time Pugh’s version of the character has stirred debate. Earlier posters showed Irulan with her face covered in clay, a striking choice that sent fans online guessing, and Pugh herself posted a story inviting viewers to check out why Irulan wears a clay mask.
The most popular fan theory ties the look to Pattinson’s shape-shifting assassin Scytale, suggesting the mask could protect her from having her appearance copied. That remains speculation, but it gives the new image some extra intrigue, since the hooded look adds to the sense that identity is a weapon in this story.
Villeneuve has described the third film as having the same DNA as the earlier ones but a very different pace, with the world completely changed. He has also said it is more action-packed and tense than his other films because it focuses on Paul navigating life as a ruler with absolute power.
That shift is reflected in the marketing. The trailer released in July showed Paul and Chani at odds, with him having betrayed her on his quest for power, and the film’s new images lean into betrayal and conspiracy rather than sweeping desert spectacle.

Villeneuve wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan, and filming ran from July to November 2025 in locations including Budapest and Abu Dhabi. The film has a reported runtime of around 2 hours and 20 minutes, with Hans Zimmer returning to compose the score and Linus Sandgren behind the camera.
Villeneuve has said he always envisioned the story as a trilogy, which makes this installment a planned conclusion rather than the start of an extended franchise. That finality has added weight to every new image, trailer and interview.
With less than two months before release, the promotional push is accelerating. Empire has revealed its collectible covers, new character images are circulating, and the studio has released new footage that puts Zendaya’s Chani front and center.
For fans, the new Irulan image is another piece of a puzzle that will be completed only in theaters. Whatever role she plays in the final conflict, it’s clear that the quiet moments in the throne room will matter as much as the battles on the sand.
