Rockstar Games has spent years building anticipation for its next mainline entry, and every new detail that leaks out only seems to raise expectations further. With “Grand Theft Auto VI” scheduled to release November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the studio has finally started opening up about just how deep some of its new systems actually run.

That deeper look arrived through a new interview with Dazed, which pulled back the curtain on several major gameplay and world-building details ahead of the game’s launch. Much of the conversation centered on dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, the pair at the heart of “GTA 6’s” story, and just how dramatically Rockstar has expanded the systems governing their world.

Among the most striking reveals is a dynamic character-switching mechanic that lets players move between Jason and Lucia during gameplay, allowing them to take on missions together as a duo or split off to handle different objectives independently. That system builds on ideas Rockstar first introduced in “GTA V,” but with considerably more flexibility built into how the two protagonists can interact throughout the story.

Rockstar also confirmed a granular physical appearance system tied directly to how players treat both characters. Eating too much causes weight gain, exercising builds visible muscle and leans out their frame, and going too long without sleep or staying constantly on the run will visibly affect how Jason and Lucia look over time. It’s a system that echoes what Rockstar previously built into “Red Dead Redemption 2,” though reportedly on a scale the series hasn’t attempted since 2004’s “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.”

The world surrounding those two characters has also been built with an unusually deep commitment to realism. Rockstar reportedly dedicated nearly an entire internal branch specifically to NPC creation, resulting in what the studio describes as its most detailed and varied non-player character population yet, with virtual residents reacting more naturally to unfolding events in the game world. That extends to smaller touches too, including phones players can browse in-game and an integrated social media system woven directly into the world.

Vice City itself draws heavily from years of research into Miami and its surrounding culture. According to the Dazed interview, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, Ruper Humphries, explained that the team specifically studied Miami’s music scene, from Miami bass to more recent artists like Kodak Black and Sexyy Red, and looked at how hip-hop culture moves through different spaces across the city, from house parties in Overtown to clubs like Booby Trap on the River, and high-end South Beach venues where bottle service runs into the thousands. “We needed characters who could take us through those worlds,” Humphries told Dazed.

That research extended well beyond music. Rockstar reportedly consulted ex-criminals, law enforcement officials, club promoters, gun dealers, and other Miami locals during development, while more than 50 real street artists contributed murals that appear throughout the game. The fashion system has also been significantly expanded, with clothing designed around specific characters, lifestyles, and locations rather than a generic catalog approach.

Beyond the world itself, Rockstar reportedly consulted real-life race car drivers to help fine-tune vehicle handling, aiming to strike a balance between the chaotic energy of “GTA V” and the grounded immersion players experienced in “Red Dead Redemption 2.” The studio’s development team has more than doubled in size since finishing “Red Dead Redemption 2,” reflecting the sheer scale of a project that’s reportedly been in the works since 2013.

With over a decade of development behind it and details like these continuing to surface ahead of November’s release, “Grand Theft Auto VI” is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious open-world games Rockstar has ever attempted.
