House of the Dragon‘ has spent its third season moving at a breakneck pace, throwing viewers headfirst into brutal naval warfare, political betrayals, and a body count that shows no signs of slowing down.

Between the Battle of the Gullet and the fallout from Corlys finally breaking his silence with Rhaenyra, the Targaryen civil war has rarely given fans a moment to catch their breath. That relentless momentum has made every new episode feel like appointment viewing.

One storyline that has quietly simmered in the background all season involves the mysterious Alys Rivers, the centuries-old woman with magical abilities who has been tangled up with Aemond Targaryen since her introduction back in season two. Fans have been anxiously waiting to see how her arc develops now that Aemond finds himself in serious danger, having collapsed on the floor of Harrenhal, begging for her help after being stabbed. That cliffhanger has left her storyline hanging in the balance heading into the next chapter.

Now a new image has surfaced offering a first look at Gayle Rankin’s Alys ahead of her return in season three’s upcoming fourth episode, set to premiere this Sunday, July 12, on HBO and HBO Max. The photo shows Alys standing amid a shadowy backdrop in an elaborate dark gown, her expression as unreadable as ever. Given how the character was left in the previous episode, this glimpse only deepens the mystery surrounding what comes next for her and Aemond.

According to the episode’s official trailer, Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower are finally set to arrive at Harrenhal, and it appears they will end up speaking with Alys once they get there. Notably absent from the preview, however, are Aemond and Alys themselves, meaning fans will likely have to wait a bit longer to see exactly how their fraught situation resolves. The show has been careful about doling out information regarding their dynamic all season.

Rankin has been candid about how much care she has put into shaping Alys as a character, particularly given how little material about her actually exists in George R.R. Martin’s source books. “I kind of love taking on those characters, especially those women, because I think I have very strong feelings about defending them and giving them a 360-degree grounded experience,” Rankin told WWD. She added that she tried hard to ground Alys as a woman with real wants and needs rather than treating her as some kind of ethereal, otherworldly figure.

That commitment to keeping Alys grounded has made her one of the more compelling wildcards of the series, especially as book readers know there is a significant relationship still waiting to unfold between her and Aemond.

In George R.R. Martin’s original telling, Aemond arrives at Harrenhal and kills the remaining members of House Strong, sparing only Alys, after which the two begin an intimate relationship that eventually leads to a pregnancy. Whether the show follows that same path remains to be seen, but Aemond’s current injured state at Harrenhal certainly sets up the pieces for that dynamic to take shape.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has also teased that Alys is among several female characters receiving expanded attention this season, alongside Helaena Targaryen and Alyn of Hull. That expanded focus tracks with how much screen time and intrigue Alys has already generated despite limited appearances so far. With her storyline poised to collide directly with Aemond’s fate in the episodes ahead, there is plenty of reason to believe her role will only grow more central from here.

What do you think will happen next with Alys Rivers and Aemond in ‘House of the Dragon’?

Season three has already proven itself willing to deviate from the source material in bold ways, and Alys’s arc could easily become one of the more significant swings the show takes this year. With only a handful of episodes left before the season’s August 9 finale, the pressure is mounting for the show to deliver answers about Harrenhal sooner rather than later.

What do you think Alys has in store once Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower reach Harrenhal? Let us know in the comments.
