According to Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Judy and Nick find themselves on the twisting trail of a mysterious reptile who arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town.”
Returning to voice their iconic characters are Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, along with Idris Elba as Chief Bogo, Jenny Slate as Dawn Bellwether, Bonnie Hunt and Don Lake as Judy’s parents, Tommy Chong as Yax, Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton, and Shakira as Gazelle.
The sequel introduces a large number of new characters, including Gary De’Snake, a pit viper voiced by Ke Huy Quan, and a beaver named Nibbles Maplestick, voiced by Fortune Feimster. Other new faces include Quinta Brunson as Dr. Fuzzby, Jean Reno as Bushron, and Patrick Warburton and Yvette Nicole Brown voicing Mayor Winddancer and EMT Otter/Bearoness Bea, respectively. Macaulay Culkin, Brenda Song, and Wilmer Valderrama also join the cast in undisclosed roles.
Development on the sequel began years ago, with Disney CEO Bob Iger confirming in February 2023 that the project was actively in production. Screenwriter Jared Bush, who directed the first film, returned as writer and director, with Byron Howard rejoining as co-director. Yvett Merino is producing the film.
Ginnifer Goodwin expressed her excitement for the sequel, saying, “I would like to see Nick have to be the one to convince Judy that the world is worth fighting for.” Jason Bateman added, “The two of us [Nick and Judy], kicking butts out there. Cleaning up the streets. We’re a couple of new cops out there. So, bad guys, be warned.”
Fans have already seen teaser footage, including a sequence where Judy and Nick track Gary in Marsh Market. Shakira confirmed that she will be returning to voice Gazelle and is working on a new song for the film alongside Ed Sheeran. Michael Giacchino will return to compose the score, adding to the film’s familiar musical charm.
With a mix of returning favorites, new characters, and thrilling adventures, Zootopia 2 promises to be one of Disney Animation’s biggest films. Fans can look forward to humor, action, and heart as Judy and Nick take on Zootopia’s latest challenge when the movie arrives in theaters later this year.
