A new look at Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey is getting attention as more details about the project continue to come out. The film is one of Nolan’s biggest productions so far and is set to bring a classic story back to the big screen in a new way.

The Odyssey is based on the ancient Greek epic by Homer. It follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he tries to return home after the Trojan War. His journey is long and dangerous, and along the way he faces different challenges, including encounters with mythological figures. His goal is to reunite with his wife, Penelope.

Matt Damon plays Odysseus in the film. To prepare for the role, he went through intense physical training and changed his diet. He also grew a real beard for the part, as Nolan wanted a more natural look. Nolan described the character by saying Odysseus is “an amazing strategist, [and] a very wily person”, showing that the film will focus on his intelligence as much as his strength.

The cast is large and includes several well-known actors. Tom Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway plays Penelope. Other actors in the film include Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Zendaya plays Athena, who helps Odysseus during his journey, and Theron plays Calypso, a figure who tries to keep him from leaving her island.

Christopher Nolan wrote the script starting in March 2024. By October of that year, the project was set up with Universal Pictures, and it was officially announced in December. Casting took place over the next several months, with Damon confirmed as the lead in early 2025.

Filming happened across many locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta. Some scenes were also shot in a studio in Los Angeles. The movie has a reported budget of about $250 million, making it the most expensive film Nolan has made. It is also his first movie to be filmed entirely using IMAX 70 mm cameras.

Nolan has said he wanted the film to feel more realistic, even though it deals with mythology. He took inspiration from a 2017 translation of The Odyssey by Emily Wilson and also looked at older films by Ray Harryhausen for visual ideas. Even before release, the film has already sparked debate, especially around the costumes and how accurate they are to history.

The Odyssey is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 17.

This film has a lot of potential because of its strong cast and Nolan’s track record. At the same time, adapting such a well-known story is not easy, and expectations are high. It will be interesting to see how audiences react to this version. What do you think about this new take on The Odyssey? Are you excited to see it, or do you think it will be hard to match the original story? Share your thoughts in the comments.
