D23, Disney’s flagship convention, returns to Anaheim from August 14 through 16, bringing announcements across Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and the rest of the Disney family under one roof.

For Marvel watchers specifically, the event carries extra weight this year. The studio’s untitled ‘X-Men‘ reboot has been the subject of nonstop speculation for months, with casting rumors swirling well before San Diego Comic-Con failed to deliver the reveal many fans expected back in July.

Now, reporting from The Hollywood Reporter’s newsletter suggests Marvel could be gearing up for a major casting announcement at next week’s Disney Entertainment Showcase. The outlet’s intel adds to a growing chorus of trade reports pointing toward August 14 as the moment fans finally get a clearer picture of the mutant lineup.

That timing lines up with what’s already been confirmed. Sadie Sink’s casting as Jean Grey became public through her surprise cameo in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ while Samara Weaving’s Emma Frost and Kit Connor’s Cyclops have both picked up legitimate traction across multiple outlets, reinforcing earlier reporting from Deadline.

Beyond those confirmed names, the casting board remains a moving target. Reports indicate that Christopher Abbott and Tom Pelphrey both tested for Professor X, with Pelphrey reportedly missing out on the role, leaving Abbott or an unnamed dark horse candidate as the likely front-runners.

Adam Driver’s situation has been especially chaotic. He’s been linked to Magneto, then Mister Sinister, and now Sebastian Shaw, with three different villain names attached to the actor within the span of a single month. Given that Weaving’s Emma Frost casting already points toward Hellfire Club territory, a Shaw connection would line up neatly with that storyline.

Other names circulating ahead of D23 include Cailee Spaeny for Rogue, Charles Melton for Beast, Inde Navarrette for Mystique, and Jayme Lawson for Storm, though none of these have received official confirmation from Marvel. An Asa Butterfield rumor also made the rounds recently, but reports have since dismissed it as inaccurate, even as Asa Germann of ‘Gen V’ reportedly tested for Cyclops before losing the role to Connor.

The stakes behind this reboot go beyond typical casting buzz. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed the mutants will be recast entirely following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ setting up what’s being called the studio’s next major arc once the current Multiverse Saga wraps.

‘X-Men’ isn’t expected to arrive until sometime in 2028, landing after both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ this December and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027. That places D23 in an unusual position: a cast reveal now would arrive roughly two years ahead of the film itself, an early move by Marvel’s usual standards.
