A brand-new streaming service called Fox One is about to launch, and it’s already one of the priciest platforms out there. Streaming has become how most people watch TV and movies these days, and more services keep popping up. But with so many options and rising costs, the prices for streaming are going up too.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced that Fox One will launch on Thursday, August 21. The service will offer live shows from Fox’s channels like Fox Sports and Fox News. It will cost $20 a month, putting it near the top of the list for expensive streaming services.

Murdoch made the announcement during Fox’s earnings call on August 5. He said Fox One will start just in time for Fox’s popular college football show, Big Noon Saturday, the NFL season opener, and the MLB playoffs. He explained that the new service is aimed at “cord-nevers,” people who have never signed up for pay-TV and probably never will.

“We have said before that our aspirations for Fox One subscribers are modest, and our measured investment toward this initiative will match these long range goals,” Murdoch said. He also mentioned that Fox will offer bundles that make sense for customers, but the main goal is to reach new viewers outside the traditional cable bundle.

Murdoch highlighted Fox’s strategy for reaching audiences through different channels. He said the traditional cable bundle is still the company’s favorite way to reach viewers because it offers great value. But streaming services like Tubi, which has many users who don’t have cable, show there is a big market for free premium content. Fox One will target another group, those willing to pay for a focused service that covers all Fox brands.

Fox One’s base price won’t include other Fox streaming services like Fox Nation and B1G+. Those will be optional add-ons. A bundle combining Fox One and Fox Nation will cost $24.99 per month.

The new service will use advanced AI technology to personalize what viewers see, mixing live and on-demand content for a smooth experience. Murdoch said the costs to launch the service will be modest since all the shows and sports come from existing Fox TV channels.

Regarding bundles, Murdoch said Fox wants to offer the most convenient and valuable options for customers who want to combine Fox One with other services. But he also stressed that Fox One will stay focused on the cord-nevers, even if that means the bundles and target audience don’t always perfectly match.

Pete Distad, Fox Corporation’s direct-to-consumer CEO, said, “We’re eager to launch Fox One in just a few weeks and super serve our viewers with the best in live news, sports and entertainment content all in one place.” He added that Fox One brings together the full power of Fox’s content to offer a great experience and value, especially for people who don’t want traditional pay-TV.

So, starting August 21, Fox One will join the crowded streaming market with a big price tag but a strong lineup of live sports, news, and entertainment. It’s clear Fox hopes to attract a new wave of viewers who prefer streaming but still want Fox’s popular programming.
