Directed by series veteran Derek Drymon, the movie features the show’s regular voice cast, including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy, and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton. Joining them are George Lopez, Ice Spice, Arturo Castro, Sherry Cola, Regina Hall, and Mark Hamill, who voices the Flying Dutchman, replacing Brian Doyle-Murray.
The story follows SpongeBob as he tries to prove his bravery to Mr. Krabs. Desperate to become a “big guy,” SpongeBob journeys to the deepest parts of the ocean to track down the Flying Dutchman. The film promises plenty of action, humor, and underwater adventure.
Pam Brady and Matt Lieberman wrote the screenplay, based on a story by Brady and series creatives Marc Ceccarelli and Kaz. John Debney composed the score for the movie, returning after scoring 2015’s Sponge Out of Water.
The film was originally planned for a May 23 release but was pushed back to December 19 due to scheduling changes caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Alongside the movie, audiences will also get an animated short, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey.
