Nick Reiner Had Schizophrenia Diagnosis, Medication Reportedly Made Him ‘Dangerous’
Nick Reiner, the son of late director Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, sources tell TMZ. In the weeks before the tragic deaths of his parents, the medications he was taking reportedly caused him to act “erratic and dangerous.”
Nick, 32, had been under psychiatric care for mental illness and also struggled with substance abuse. Sources say he had recently been in a high-end Los Angeles rehab facility that focuses on mental health and addiction, costing around $70,000 per month.
According to insiders, three to four weeks before the murders, doctors adjusted his medications in an attempt to stabilize him, but the changes made his behavior worse. “Nick was out of his head,” one source told TMZ.
The tragic events occurred on December 14, when Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed both deaths were ruled homicides caused by multiple sharp force injuries.
Nick Reiner was arrested that evening and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He appeared in court for the first time this week, with an arraignment scheduled for January 7, 2026.
Reports indicate that the night before their deaths, during a holiday party, Nick had a verbal altercation with his parents. Friends and guests described his behavior as alarming and erratic, with one insider telling People, “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.” Another source called his actions “creepy.” Rob Reiner reportedly expressed fear of his son shortly before the tragedy, saying at a party, “I’m petrified of [Nick]. I think my own son can hurt me.”
Nick has a history of personal struggles. As a teenager, he entered rehabilitation 18 times for heroin and cocaine addiction. In 2015, he co-wrote the film Being Charlie, based on his own experiences with addiction and his relationship with his father, which Rob Reiner directed. At the time of his parents’ deaths, Nick was living with them.
Family and friends gathered to honor Rob and Michele at a memorial service held at Albert Brooks’ Los Angeles mansion. Attendees included Billy Crystal, Larry David, Bill Hader, and Conan O’Brien. Many were reportedly emotional, reflecting on Rob’s concerns for his son before his death.
This case shines a light on the challenges families face when mental health issues and substance abuse collide. It is a heartbreaking example of how serious struggles can escalate if not carefully managed.
This tragedy is a painful reminder of the importance of mental health care and support systems. It shows how critical it is for families and professionals to monitor high-risk situations closely. What do you think about this story? Share your thoughts in the comments.
