Nicolas Cage Says Losing ‘Spider-Noir’ Was a Blessing in Disguise

Most actors would mourn a canceled show that critics adored. Nicolas Cage is not most actors, and his live-action turn as a hard-boiled, web-slinging detective was never going to follow a standard playbook. The ‘Spider-Noir‘ star has now made it clear that he sees the series’ early exit as a gift rather than a loss.

The show arrived in late May as Cage’s first regular television role, after he voiced the character in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ in 2018. Developed by Oren Uziel, it dropped on MGM+ before reaching Prime Video, with the cast also featuring Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson. It also offered a twist no Marvel project had tried, letting viewers watch every episode in either black and white or color.

Now Cage has admitted he was relieved when the series did not get renewed. Speaking to IGN’s Jeffrey Vega on the red carpet for his sports comedy ‘Madden’, he was asked whether Ben Reilly’s story still had more to tell. His answer was a firm no, and he said he meant what he said earlier about the show being a perfect season.

The actor’s reasoning comes down to the nature of the character. Cage described his take on Ben Reilly as idiosyncratic and high-risk, the kind of tightrope act that gets harder to sustain the longer it runs. Stretch it across multiple seasons, he suggested, and the performance could start to wear out its welcome.

That means he was happy when the studio did not pick it up. He also pointed to his next television project, ‘True Detective’, noting that it is a single-season commitment, and said he prefers it that way. It is a very Cage perspective, favoring a bold, compact swing over a long-running franchise grind.

His stance is not new. After news of the cancellation broke in September, Cage gave a statement saying the show had said what he wanted it to say. The IGN interview shows that, a couple of months later, he has not changed his mind.

The decision stung because the numbers looked so strong. ‘Spider-Noir’ holds a 92% critics score and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned 11 Emmy nominations. Variety reported that Nielsen recorded 2.6 billion viewing minutes during its first 6 weeks.

Not every critic was won over, though. Variety’s review argued the series leaned more on style than substance, while The A.V. Club suggested Cage struggled to fit a movie-star mindset into a TV format. Still, the Rotten Tomatoes consensus praised his gloriously pulpy performance as the thing that made every quip crackle.

Amazon has not spelled out a specific reason for the cancellation. Some outlets have pointed to high production costs and uneven viewing, but those claims remain unconfirmed by the studio. The series was the first to reach screens under the partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, after the earlier ‘Silk: Spider Society’ was scrapped before production.

Uziel has since shared a few ideas about where the story could have gone. Had the show continued, he said he would likely have moved Ben Reilly to a new location, with Los Angeles noir stories offering plenty of material. Earlier in the show’s run, the showrunner also indicated that World War II could serve as an amazing canvas for a second season.

Those ideas will now stay on the drawing board. The partnership between Amazon and Sony continues, with several projects based on Sony’s Marvel characters still in development. Nothing has been announced to revive ‘Spider-Noir’ elsewhere, so the 8-episode run stands as the complete story.

That may be exactly how Cage wants it. In an era when every hit is expected to become a franchise, there is something refreshing about a star who would rather leave the stage early than overstay his welcome.

Do you agree with Nicolas Cage that Spider-Noir was better off as a one-season series, or would you have wanted a second season?
