Halloween has a way of bringing out the best in ‘Saturday Night Live’. Between costume-heavy monologues, spooky sketches and a built-in excuse for big cameos, the holiday episode often lands as one of the most anticipated hours of the year.

This time, the show had an extra ingredient in the form of a horror breakout. Inde Navarrette arrived in Studio 8H with serious momentum behind her, thanks to the success of ‘Obsession’, and she brought plenty of curiosity with her.

That curiosity translated into numbers. The October 31 episode drew 5.2 million viewers, the biggest audience of ‘SNL’ Season 52 so far, and it reached 1.3 million adults 18-49, according to LateNighter, which first reported the Nielsen Live+Same Day data.

Those figures represent gains of 17% among total viewers and 19% in the key demo compared with the show’s previous new episode, hosted by Shane Gillis on October 10. The audience was the show’s largest in nearly a year, and the demo number was its best in nearly 2 years.

The Halloween installment cleared the season’s earlier high of 4.6 million, which belonged to the season opener hosted by Jalen Brunson. It also topped the Dakota Johnson episode, which featured a Taylor Swift cameo, and the Gillis episode.

Context makes the result even more notable. Variety reported that during Season 51, only 2 episodes surpassed 5.2 million viewers: Bowen Yang’s final episode as a cast member with Ariana Grande hosting and Cher as musical guest at 5.4 million, and the season finale with Will Ferrell and Paul McCartney at 5.3 million.

The episode did well outside of traditional TV, too. It was the most-watched episode of the season on Peacock, and its best streaming performance since Harry Styles hosted in March.

Video clips from the episode also pulled in 325 million views across YouTube, Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok, another season high. The cold open alone had passed 4.5 million YouTube views by Wednesday afternoon.

There is one caveat. Live+Same Day numbers do not include Peacock or social platforms, and delayed viewing can change the picture, as the Gillis episode added 1.4 million viewers over 3 days to reach 5.8 million.

‘Obsession’ Star Inde Navarrette Turns Heads in NYC After ‘SNL’ Debut

Navarrette’s hosting debut leaned into the holiday, and her monologue was packed with moments that fueled online chatter. She joked about her upcoming role as Rogue in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’, and used the bit to take a pointed swipe at Gillis over his controversial remarks about women’s gym clothing from his own monologue.

The cast joined in with Halloween costumes, including Marcello Hernandez as a sexy TSA agent, Kam Patterson as Elizabeth Holmes and Jeremy Culhane as Wolverine, pitching himself for the ‘X-Men’ film. Navarrette’s boyfriend, Nick Aiello, also made an appearance in the audience.

The episode’s cold open delivered a nostalgia hit, with Tom Hanks reprising David S. Pumpkins alongside ‘SNL’ alum Bobby Moynihan. Gracie Abrams, performing as the musical guest for the second time after her 2024 debut, rounded out the night.

Navarrette also showed range across the sketches. She played a ghost aboard the Queen Mary opposite Hernandez, appeared in a spoof of ‘Paw Patrol’, and starred in ‘The Inventor’s Wife’, a bloody sketch built around a small robot.

Navarrette’s rise has been rapid. As Nikki in ‘Obsession’, she became the face of a horror hit that has reportedly scared up $525 million at the worldwide box office, and the character became a popular Halloween costume this year.

That kind of cultural moment is exactly what ‘SNL’ hopes to harness when booking hosts. A breakout star on the most horror-friendly weekend of the year offered the show a natural hook, and viewers responded.

The result is a bright spot in a season that has already had its share of controversy. With several more episodes ahead, the Halloween number now stands as the benchmark every future host will have to chase.

Did Inde Navarrette deserve to score the biggest audience of Saturday Night Live Season 52 with her Halloween hosting debut?
