‘Obsession’ Star Inde Navarrette Reveals Her Plan to Perfect Rogue’s Accent for ‘X-Men’ Reboot

Marvel Studios’ long-awaited X-Men reboot has been generating steady buzz ever since its ensemble cast was officially unveiled at D23 in August. Between casting surprises and fan debates over who best fits each iconic mutant, the film has quickly become one of the most closely watched projects on Marvel’s upcoming slate.

Among the new additions, Inde Navarrette’s casting as Rogue stood out as a particularly notable choice, especially given how central the character’s distinctive Southern accent has been to nearly every previous version of Rogue across film and animation. Fans have been curious to see how the “Obsession” breakout would approach a dialect so closely tied to the character’s identity.

Now Navarrette is opening up about exactly how she plans to nail that accent, revealing a genuinely personal connection to the kind of Southern women who inspired Rogue in the first place. Speaking about her preparation process, she explained that she grew up in Texas for a good portion of her life, drawing specifically on memories of women from Corpus Christi, saying, “Those Southern women are really my favorite.”

Navarrette didn’t stop at her own upbringing, either. She revealed plans to travel directly to Mississippi, Rogue’s canonical home state in the comics, in order to further refine the character’s accent and mannerisms before stepping into the role.

Rogue’s Mississippi roots have long been a defining part of her character across Marvel media, with the comics placing her upbringing in the fictional Caldecott County, a rural area near the Mississippi River. That regional identity has shaped nearly every iteration of the character, from Lenore Zann’s memorable voice work in the 1990s animated series to Anna Paquin’s more restrained live-action take in Fox’s original ‘X-Men’ film franchise.

Navarrette’s approach suggests she’s aiming for something that leans back toward that more pronounced, comic-accurate accent rather than the subtler version Paquin brought to the role decades ago. Given how much cultural weight Rogue’s voice and cadence carry for longtime fans, her willingness to physically travel to the state for research signals just how seriously she’s treating the assignment.

The actress made her comments during a Toronto International Film Festival conversation with Entertainment Tonight, where she also touched on the broader excitement surrounding her new opportunities following her breakout performance in ‘Obsession.’ That film’s success played a significant role in getting her noticed for the Marvel role in the first place, even as some fans had been rooting for other actresses rumored to be in contention.

Navarrette joins an ensemble that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Jake Schreier is directing the project from a script written by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, marking the character’s first appearance as part of the core Marvel Cinematic Universe rather than Fox’s standalone franchise.

The film is currently set for release on May 5, 2028, giving Navarrette a considerable runway to fully develop her take on the character before cameras roll. Given how much attention Marvel has already placed on getting this new mutant roster right, her hands-on approach to research fits the broader pattern of care the studio appears to be taking with this reboot.

Whether her accent work ultimately draws comparisons to Zann’s more theatrical animated performance or forges something entirely new remains to be seen. For now, Navarrette’s willingness to dig into both her own personal history and Rogue’s specific Southern roots suggests she understands exactly how much this particular detail matters to the character’s legacy.
