One Piece Celebrates 600 Million Sales by Literally Sinking Its Biggest Secret to the Ocean Floor
The manga One Piece has reached a huge sales record. Publisher Shueisha confirmed that the series has now passed 600 million copies in circulation worldwide, with sales data previously reported by Oricon backing up the milestone. The number makes it the best-selling manga in history.
To mark the moment, creator Eiichiro Oda launched a project that surprised fans. In a video shared on social media, Oda is shown writing down the true secret of the One Piece treasure. This is the mystery that has driven the story since it began and the goal that Monkey D. Luffy continues to chase.

After finishing the document, Oda placed it inside a small treasure chest. The chest was sealed and later lowered deep into the ocean. The process was carried out with help from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program.
They assisted with the safe deployment and filming of the project. The container now rests about 650 meters underwater. It is meant to stay there until the series officially reveals the truth in its final chapter.

The video claims this is the first time Oda has ever written the ending down. Until now, he had reportedly kept the secret only in his head. That detail adds even more weight to the stunt, since the ending of One Piece has been carefully guarded for decades.
The series first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 and released its first collected volume later that same year. Since then, it has grown into a global franchise that includes anime, films, merchandise, and live-action adaptations. Some fans have even argued that it has outsold long-running comic icons like Superman, though there is no clear data to directly compare the two.
The idea of hiding the secret at the bottom of the sea fits perfectly with the pirate theme of the story. In theory, someone could attempt to dive down and retrieve it, but the hope is that the mystery remains untouched until Oda reveals it himself.
This was a creative and bold way to celebrate such a massive achievement. It keeps fans excited while protecting the story’s biggest reveal. What do you think about this underwater secret? Would you want to know the ending early, or wait for it in the manga? Share your thoughts in the comments.
