Chapek’s time as CEO was defined almost immediately by crisis. He took the reins mere weeks before COVID-19 forced Disney to shut down its parks, cruises, and film and television productions worldwide, throwing the company into unprecedented uncertainty right as he was settling into the role.

From there, his tenure only grew more contentious, marked by management decisions that reportedly alienated key executives, a bruising public dispute with actress Scarlett Johansson, and his handling of Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, which drew criticism from both company employees and the state’s governor.
