Australian actor David Berry, known for his roles in Outlander and A Place to Call Home, is getting ready to take on a leading role in a new R-rated wedding comedy. The film is being developed by British filmmaker Gary Sinyor, who is returning to the U.S. for the first time since making The Bachelor in 1999 with Renée Zellweger.

This upcoming comedy is still in early development, with Sinyor currently in talks with potential backers. According to reports, the story is inspired by his own life and centers on a man preparing for his second marriage, while his new bride is getting married for the first time. The mix of experience and fresh nerves is expected to fuel both heart and chaos.

Sinyor and Berry recently worked together on the TV series Hapless, which is available on Peacock in the U.S. and on Prime in the UK. That collaboration seems to have left a strong impression on the director, who praised Berry’s performance and presence.

Speaking about casting Berry, Sinyor said, “David has a laidback Aussie charm which conflicts superbly with the rude chaos that surrounds him in the project. Now we just have to find his equally charming bride.” He also mentioned that the team is considering casting both popular social media personalities and more established names for the supporting roles. “We’re looking at funny funny people on social media as well as established talent,” he added.

“Something Blue should help a few actors with star potential cross over from the online world into the mainstream cinema.”

Sinyor also shared his thoughts on making a comedy in the U.S. again after so many years. “It’s been too long since I’ve filmed in the U.S. Some say Hollywood has given up on comedy, but comedy should never give up on Hollywood,” he said. “Despite better incentives being offered elsewhere, I like the idea of shooting on location and supporting the U.S. industry which used to be known for making the laugh-out-loud comedy.”

While details on production start dates and the rest of the cast haven’t been shared yet, the project seems to be moving forward with solid momentum, especially with a lead like Berry and a director who’s eager to bring laughter back to the big screen.

It’s always exciting to see fresh comedy coming from filmmakers who are passionate about the genre. And seeing David Berry shift from dramatic roles to something more playful will be interesting.
