Paramount Is Making a New Live-Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie, While ‘Last Ronin’ Gets a Disappointing Update
Paramount is gearing up to bring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back to live-action with a new film. The project is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, known for his work on the Sonic the Hedgehog movies.
According to Variety, the studio is aiming for a family-friendly story focusing on the four turtle brothers: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.
This new approach has put plans for the R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin on hold. That darker adaptation, based on the graphic novel series, was announced in 2024 and had former Warner Bros. chief Walter Hamada and screenwriter Tyler Burton Smith involved.
Director Ilya Naishuller, known for Nobody, was also in talks to lead the project. Sources say the film is still in development, but is unlikely to move forward soon, Variety reports.
Fans haven’t seen a live-action TMNT movie since 2016’s Out of the Shadows, which struggled at the box office, earning $245 million worldwide on a $135 million budget. Paramount then turned to animation, releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in 2023. Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, it earned $181 million globally on a $70 million budget. A sequel, Mutant Mayhem 2, is scheduled for release on September 17, 2027.
