Paramount+ Renews Gritty Gangster Series for a Second Season
Paramount+ is bringing back its popular mob series for a second season. The announcement came not long after the first season finished streaming. The show features big-name stars like Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren, and is created by a team led by Guy Ritchie, Ronan Bennett, and Jez Butterworth.
Mob stories have always had a loyal following, and this one proved to be no different. The debut episode alone drew 26 million views within its first couple of months in English-speaking countries. It also took off quickly in other markets, making it the second biggest launch for an original Paramount+ series, just behind Landman.
The series became a regular on Nielsen’s Top 10 list for streaming originals, staying there for several weeks in a row. This strong performance led to the fast decision to continue the story with a second season.
Chris McCarthy from Paramount called the show a success. “With more than 26 million viewers and climbing, MobLand has become a resounding triumph,” he said. He credited the creative team and actors for the show’s rise in popularity and noted that it even hit number one in the UK.
The plot follows a tense power struggle between two crime families. As their feud grows, both their empires and personal lives start to fall apart. The cast also includes actors like Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, and Jasmine Jobson.
David C. Glasser from 101 Studios shared how the idea came together. “MobLand was one of those incredible moments where Chris McCarthy came to us with the vision of creating the next great mob series,” he said. After talking with Guy Ritchie, they knew they had the right formula. Glasser praised the team’s work and the performances from the cast.
The series is produced by Paramount+ with help from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios. Paramount Global is in charge of distributing the show around the world.
Reviews have been mostly positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 75% approval score. Critics there say Tom Hardy’s performance adds weight to the series, even if it doesn’t do anything brand new for the genre. Over on Metacritic, the show earned a 59 out of 100, showing more mixed reactions.
The cast was confirmed over several months, starting with Hardy, Brosnan, and Mirren in late 2024. Other names joined soon after, with the full cast in place by early 2025.
In my view, it’s not a surprise this show got renewed. People love a good crime drama, especially when the cast is full of stars. While some critics say it’s not groundbreaking, its popularity says a lot. It clearly hit the mark with viewers. What do you think? Are you excited for another season?
