Paramount Pictures and Skydance are moving forward with a live-action Call of Duty movie, and they have found their director.

Peter Berg, known for films like Deepwater Horizon and the series Friday Night Lights, will direct the movie and co-write the script with Taylor Sheridan.

Sheridan, one of Hollywood’s top hitmakers, recently announced he will move his overall deal to NBCUniversal in 2029. Until then, Paramount Skydance plans to keep him busy with the project. Given Sheridan’s experience with action-packed thrillers and procedural dramas, the Call of Duty adaptation seems like a natural fit, according to Variety.

Details about the plot are still under wraps, but the film will be based on the hugely popular first-person shooter video game franchise.

Paramount has previously had success turning games into movies, including Sonic the Hedgehog, and other video game adaptations like Super Mario Bros. and Minecraft have also done well in recent years.

The journey to a Call of Duty movie has been long. Back in 2015, Activision Blizzard launched a production studio to create a live-action cinematic universe for the franchise. Stefano Sollima was originally set to direct and considered casting Tom Hardy and Chris Pine.

Joe Robert Cole was later tapped to write a sequel. Filming was planned to start in 2019 for a release around 2020 or 2021, but the project was put on hold as it was not a top priority for Activision.

Now, in September, Paramount and Microsoft’s Activision have officially signed a deal to develop, produce, and distribute the live-action film. This new announcement makes it clear that the Call of Duty movie is officially back on track.

This adaptation has a lot of potential. With Peter Berg directing and Taylor Sheridan co-writing, fans can expect intense action and strong storytelling. What do you think about a Call of Duty movie finally coming to the big screen? Share your thoughts in the comments.
