Peacock Renews Its Apocalyptic Hit for Season 3 — With a New Captain at the Wheel
Peacock is moving ahead with a third season of Twisted Metal, as reported by Variety. The renewal comes with a major shift behind the scenes. Michael Jonathan Smith, who helped create the series and led it through its first two seasons, is leaving.
David Reed will take over as showrunner and executive producer under a deal with Sony Pictures Television.
Season 2 arrived on Peacock in July and continued to bring strong numbers. NBCUniversal says the season has reached 993 million minutes watched so far, making it one of the most successful returning scripted titles on the service.
The cast includes Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Seanoa, and Will Arnett, who all returned for the second season.
The show is inspired by the long-running PlayStation game series. It follows John Doe, played by Mackie, who travels across a broken, lawless America as he carries out a delivery mission that could change his life. The world he moves through is filled with danger, violent drivers, and strange characters who challenge him at every turn.
Work on the show began years before the first season premiered. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions started developing the series in 2019. Peacock ordered the full first season in 2022, released it in 2023, and followed it with a second season this year. The third season order came today, confirming the show will continue its run.
