Pedro Pascal is in talks to take the lead role in Todd Haynes’ upcoming gay romance film De Noche, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

He would star opposite Danny Ramirez in a story set in the 1930s, about two men who leave Los Angeles for Mexico in search of love and freedom.

The project first made headlines last August when Joaquin Phoenix, who was originally attached to star, dropped out just five days before filming was scheduled to begin in Guadalajara, Mexico.

A source previously told THR that the team was “devastated” by his departure. The reasons for Phoenix leaving the project have not been made public.

Ramirez has remained attached as the co-star, and Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler are producing through Killer Films.

Pascal has been considered for the lead role since late last year, but his involvement is only now coming to public attention. Deadline was the first to report on his potential casting.

Pascal recently appeared alongside Phoenix in Ari Aster’s Eddington and has been seen this year in Materialists and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He is also set to appear in next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. Earlier this year, he received an Emmy nomination for his role in HBO’s The Last of Us.

Todd Haynes is no stranger to critically acclaimed projects. His 2023 Netflix film May December starred Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman and earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay.

His previous works include Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, and Carol, the latter of which featured Phoenix’s longtime partner Rooney Mara. Haynes also earned an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of Far From Heaven.

The film is expected to explore a passionate romance against the backdrop of 1930s Mexico, bringing together Pascal, Ramirez, and a highly respected director in Haynes. Pascal’s involvement could breathe new energy into the project after last year’s sudden setback.

Pascal joining De Noche could make this one of the most talked-about romantic dramas in recent years. With Haynes at the helm and the story set in such a vibrant period, the film has strong potential for both critical and audience acclaim. What do you think about Pascal stepping into this role?
