Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are finally pulling back the curtain on the long-developing next chapter in the Jump Street franchise, and it now has a very specific title: 24 Jump Street. The update comes from a recent conversation on The Empire Podcast, where the duo discussed both the upcoming animated finale Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and their return to the comedy series that made them household names in Hollywood.
According to Lord and Miller, 24 Jump Street is currently in active development, with director Rodney Rothman leading a rewrite of a script that has been sitting unused for years. Rothman, who also co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is now helping shape the next installment into something fresh while still honoring the chaotic tone of the earlier films. Miller explained that the project is essentially being revived from an earlier draft, saying that a version of the script had already existed but was “dusty” and needed significant updates before moving forward.
The unusual title itself comes with a joke rooted in the franchise’s own history. Lord revealed that an earlier idea for the sequel was called 23 Jump Street, but the team ultimately decided to skip ahead. As he put it during the podcast, “We’re calling this 24, out of respect for the dead.” The comment reflects the series’ long-running self-aware humor, where each installment tends to mock the very idea of endless sequels while still embracing them.
The film is expected to reunite key names from the series, including Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube, though their involvement is still in early talks. Producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Neal H. Moritz are all attached to return, continuing their long association with the franchise.
While no official production start date has been confirmed, industry reporting from Variety has indicated that the project is actively moving forward, with writing duties shared between Rodney Rothman, Jonah Hill, and Meghan Malloy.
At the same time, Lord and Miller are balancing multiple major projects, including finishing work on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which they described as being deep in the editing phase. That film is still targeting a 2027 release and is currently being developed with an ambitious IMAX presentation in mind. Even with that massive animation project underway, the filmmakers made it clear that 24 Jump Street remains a priority and is steadily progressing behind the scenes.
