Prime Video Greenlights a Six-Part Series Based on Stephen King’s Only London-Set Horror Story

Stephen King’s stories have been colonizing streaming platforms at an almost dizzying pace lately, with new adaptations announced seemingly every few weeks across nearly every major service. That trend shows no signs of slowing down, and this latest addition brings King’s work to a corner of the map fans haven’t seen tackled quite like this before.

Prime Video is diving into the horror master’s catalog once again, this time reaching for one of his lesser-adapted works. The project marks something of a milestone for King’s ever-expanding television footprint, tapping into a story that stands apart from the rest of his bibliography for one very specific reason.

Prime Video has officially greenlit ‘Crouch End’ as a six-part limited series, based on King’s short story of the same name and marking the first King adaptation ever produced in the UK. The story holds a unique distinction within King’s body of work, as it remains the only tale he’s ever set in London, taking its name from the real North London district where the events unfold.

The official synopsis promises a tense supernatural mystery: when global movie star Doris Freeman bursts into a London police station claiming strange phenomena are behind her husband’s disappearance, police inspector Ted Vetter must determine whether she’s telling the truth, whether she could be a murderer, or whether something far more chilling is actually at play.

Paul Tomalin, known for his work on ‘Bodies,’ is adapting the story for the series, while Tom Shankland, the director behind 2008’s horror film ‘The Children,’ will helm the project. Both creatives expressed genuine excitement about bringing King’s story to the screen, with Tomalin describing the source material as something that has haunted his nightmares ever since he first read it years ago.

Shankland echoed that enthusiasm, calling himself a lifelong Stephen King fan and promising the adaptation will be cinematic, original, and thought-provoking in equal measure. The series is being produced by Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season, with Tomalin, Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane, and Ben Irving all serving as executive producers.

‘Crouch End’ was originally published in 1980 as part of an anthology called ‘New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos,’ carrying distinct Lovecraftian influences that set it apart tonally from much of King’s more grounded work. The story later resurfaced in his 1993 collection ‘Nightmares & Dreamscapes’ and received a previous television adaptation as part of TNT’s 2006 anthology series based on that same collection.

This new version joins a rapidly growing wave of King adaptations currently in various stages of development across the industry, including a new take on ‘Desperation,’ the second season of ‘Welcome to Derry,’ an adaptation called ‘Mister Yummy,’ Mike Flanagan’s version of ‘The Mist,’ and a fresh take on ‘The Dark Tower.’ The series also slots into Prime Video’s expanding lineup of UK originals, joining recently announced titles like ‘Dirty’ and ‘The Boys of Tommen’ alongside existing shows such as ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ and ‘The Girlfriend.’

With King’s influence across television continuing to grow seemingly by the week, ‘Crouch End’ represents a genuinely distinctive entry in that expansion, bringing his singular brand of cosmic dread to a very specific, very real corner of London.
