Quentin Tarantino Hates This Actor… Even Though He Calls ‘Midnight in Paris’ a Masterpiece: “I can’t Stand Him”
Quentin Tarantino has a complicated relationship with Owen Wilson. The legendary director made it clear that he doesn’t like the actor, even though he enjoys one of his most famous movies. Tarantino told The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, “I really can’t stand Owen Wilson. I mean, I can’t stand him.”
His feelings, however, are not so simple. Tarantino explained that his opinion changed after watching Midnight in Paris several times. “The second time I watched the movie, I was like, ‘Ah, okay, don’t be such a p****. He’s not so bad. He’s not so bad.’ And then the third time I watched it, I found myself watching him,” he said.
He added, “I spent the first time watching the movie loving it and hating him.”
Midnight in Paris is a 2011 fantasy comedy written and directed by Woody Allen. The movie tells the story of Gil Pender, played by Owen Wilson, a screenwriter and aspiring novelist who is stuck in a complicated relationship with his materialistic fiancée, played by Rachel McAdams. Every night at midnight, Gil magically travels back to Paris in the 1920s, where he meets famous artists and writers and begins to see his life in a new way.
The film also stars Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Carla Bruni, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Stoll, Alison Pill, Kurt Fuller, Mimi Kennedy, Lea Seydoux, Marion Cotillard, and Michael Sheen. It was produced by the Spanish company Mediapro and Allen’s US-based Gravier Productions. The movie premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and hit theaters in the United States on May 20, 2011.
Midnight in Paris was a big hit with critics. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay in 2012. It was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Art Direction.
Critics at Cannes also praised the film. Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter highlighted the cinematography by Darius Khondji and said the movie “has the concision and snappy pace of Allen’s best work.”
Even though Tarantino admits he doesn’t like Owen Wilson personally, it seems he can’t help but admire his performance in Midnight in Paris. It’s a strange mix of love for the movie and frustration with the actor, showing that even the most celebrated filmmakers can have strong and conflicting opinions about the people they watch on screen.
