Quentin Tarantino once revealed who he considers his most important collaborator, and it might surprise some fans.

While many might expect him to pick one of the actors he frequently works with, like Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, or Christoph Waltz, Tarantino instead chose his longtime film editor, Sally Menke.

Speaking in an interview for the Grindhouse (Death Proof) DVD, Tarantino called Menke “hands-down my number one collaborator”. He explained, “I write by myself, but when it comes to the editing, I write with Sally. It’s the true epitome, I guess, of a collaboration because I don’t remember what was her idea, what was my idea. We’re just right there together.”

Menke tragically passed away in September 2010 at age 56 while hiking near the Hollywood Hills during extreme heat. Until her passing, she had been the only editor Tarantino had ever worked with. Their partnership began with Reservoir Dogs and continued on every Tarantino film up to 2009’s Inglourious Basterds.

In the documentary The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing, Tarantino reflected on his preference for a female editor, saying he believed they would be “more nurturing to the movie and to me. They wouldn’t be trying to win their way just to win their way… They would be nurturing me through this process.” Menke’s approach to editing allowed Tarantino to feel supported while tackling challenging scenes.

Menke herself emphasized the importance of editors in her work, telling the Observer that they are “the quiet heroes of movies. We have a very private relationship with our directors, most often conducted in dark rooms.” She added that the role could be intense, noting in The Cutting Edge, “I see [Tarantino] more than my husband.” Tarantino, in turn, joked about their close collaboration, saying, “sometimes I get annoyed with her for not reading my mind 100%. It’s not good enough that she reads it 80% of the time.”

Tarantino and Menke’s work together is a reminder of how essential editing is to filmmaking. Their partnership shows that behind every iconic director is often an equally talented editor shaping the story.

It’s fascinating to see a director openly credit his editor as his closest collaborator. It highlights how much teamwork and trust go into making a movie, even when the director is often seen as the “star” of the process. What do you think about Tarantino’s choice?
