Quentin Tarantino Slams This Specific Movie Genre, Calls It “Corrupted Cinema”
Quentin Tarantino has never been shy about sharing his opinions on movies, and in a recent interview with TheTalks, the filmmaker didn’t hold back on his thoughts about certain genres.
Known for his bold filmmaking and unique style, Tarantino reflected on the types of movies he admires, and those he thinks are harming cinema.
The Kill Bill director explained that while he enjoys historical films, he isn’t a fan of costume dramas. He has explored historical themes in movies like Django Unchained, set in 1800s America, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which reimagines the Manson Murders in the 1960s.
Tarantino was especially critical of biopics, calling them “corrupted cinema.” He said, “Another genre I have no respect for is the biopic. They are just big excuses for actors to win Oscars.” He believes the genre has become overly focused on dramatic performances and award recognition rather than creative storytelling.
He explained his critique by pointing to how biopics often try to cover a person’s entire life, which he thinks leads to boring films. “Even the most interesting person—if you are telling their life from beginning to end, it’s going to be a f**** boring movie,” Tarantino said. He argues that biopics should focus on a single moment or a small period of time to truly engage audiences.
Tarantino used Elvis Presley as an example. Instead of telling the whole story of Elvis’s life, he suggested making a movie about one day, such as the day he walked into Sun Records, and ending it there. “Make a movie about the whole day before he walked into Sun Records, and the movie ends when he walks through that door. That’s a movie,” he explained.
When asked whether he would watch a biopic about his own life, Tarantino responded with honesty: “I might be flattered. But I wouldn’t watch it.”
Tarantino’s comments underline his commitment to storytelling that is bold, specific, and original. His perspective challenges the current trend of biopics dominating award seasons and reminds filmmakers to focus on creativity over convention.
In my opinion, Tarantino makes a strong point. Biopics can feel formulaic when they try to cover everything in a person’s life. Focusing on smaller, meaningful moments could make these films far more compelling. What do you think about his take on biopics? Share your thoughts in the comments.
