Rafael Pineda, Univision Legend, Dead at 88 – Spanish-Language News Loses an Icon
Rafael Pineda, the longtime Univision 41 news anchor and a beloved figure in New York’s Hispanic community, has died at 88. According to the network, Pineda passed away on Sunday in Florida, leaving behind a career that spanned more than four decades and set a standard for Spanish-language journalism.
Pineda joined WXTV in 1972 and remained the station’s main anchor until his retirement in 2013. Over those 41 years, he became a familiar and trusted presence in countless homes across the Tri-State area. At the time he stepped down, he held the record as New York’s longest-serving news anchor.
Univision 41 released a statement praising Pineda as a respected journalist and pioneering voice in Hispanic media whose legacy helped shape Spanish-language journalism in the United States. Colleagues highlighted his dedication to both his craft and his audience, noting his integrity and professionalism.
Adriana Vargas-Sino, vice president of news at Univision 41, said, He was a pillar of our newsroom and a trusted voice for generations of viewers. She added, His commitment to journalistic excellence and his deep respect for our community set the standard for Spanish-language news in New York.
Roberto Yañez, senior vice president of content strategy for the East Coast, reflected on Pineda’s hands-on approach in the newsroom. Every single day, he made it a point to walk the entire newsroom floor and personally greet each person, Yañez said, emphasizing the warmth and leadership Pineda brought to his team.
Born in Cuba in 1937, Pineda moved to the United States before he turned 20. Over the years, he became a trusted voice for millions of viewers who relied on him to deliver news with honesty and clarity. At the time of his retirement, Pineda told the press, If they gave me a chance to live my life again, I would do it exactly the same. He added, This was my family … here are my brothers, sisters … this is my house but with all of you.

Pineda was among the first Hispanic anchors to interview a sitting U.S. president, and his career earned him numerous honors, including a star on the Walk of Fame at Union City’s Celia Cruz Park in 2005. His coverage of major events, including the September 11 attacks, left a lasting impression on viewers and reflected his strong connection to the city he served.
Even after leaving the anchor desk, Pineda stayed involved in the industry and occasionally returned for special events, including Univision’s 50th-anniversary celebration. His mentorship shaped many journalists who now continue his work in Spanish-language media.
Univision 41 described his passing as the end of an era. Pineda’s decades-long dedication not only informed and connected Spanish-speaking communities but also inspired generations of reporters who follow in his footsteps.
