The face behind the show’s mysterious extraterrestrial leader has quietly built one of television’s most recognizable character-actor résumés over the past several decades.

In Episode 2 of “Lanterns,” John Stewart is abducted by a group of seemingly hostile aliens led by a being named Antaan, who believes a surviving Manhunter is hiding in the town of Rushville, Nebraska, potentially posing a massive threat to humanity. Because Antaan and his people can’t enter the town without being detected, he recruits John to identify the Manhunter directly, giving him just forty-eight hours before taking matters into his own hands.

That commanding, authoritative presence radiating off Antaan isn’t a coincidence. The actor behind him, Paul Ben-Victor, has spent decades playing exactly this type of character across some of television’s most acclaimed dramas, and if his face feels instantly familiar, it’s because chances are you’ve already seen him somewhere before.

Ben-Victor is a veteran character actor whose career has largely centered around commanding, tough-talking figures, whether they’re enforcing the law or breaking it entirely. His breakout role came on another HBO series that became a genuine pop culture phenomenon in its own right: “The Wire.”

On “The Wire,” Ben-Victor played Spiros “Vondas” Vondopoulos, a high-ranking member of the criminal organization run by a mysterious figure known only as The Greek. Introduced in Season 2, Vondas served as a key intermediary in the show’s sprawling drug and smuggling operations, becoming one of the series’ more memorable antagonists during his run.

Beyond “The Wire,” Ben-Victor has built a remarkably steady career playing similarly forceful characters across a wide range of projects. He’s appeared in “Entourage” as Alan Gray, spent time on HBO’s “Vinyl,” and more recently earned recognition for his recurring role as Ilan Roklov on Netflix’s Golden Globe-nominated comedy “Nobody Wants This.” His film credits include Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” alongside collaborations with directors like Tony Scott, Clint Eastwood and Antoine Fuqua throughout his decades-long career.

Ben-Victor’s casting as Antaan was first announced back in April 2025, and his character description immediately caught the attention of longtime Green Lantern comic readers. Described as “an extraterrestrial devoted to exposing the truth and exacting vengeance against those who wronged his people,” consumed by “a deep and unrelenting hatred for the law,” the framing led many fans to speculate that Antaan might actually be a disguised version of Atrocitus, the rage-fueled founder of the Red Lantern Corps in DC Comics.

That theory has only gained traction since Antaan’s proper on-screen debut in Episode 2, given how closely his motivations mirror Atrocitus’s own comic book origin story involving a Manhunter-led massacre. Whether or not that theory ultimately proves accurate, Ben-Victor’s performance has already established Antaan as a formidable, morally complicated presence within the show’s expanding mythology.

Given his extensive history playing authority figures who exist in morally gray territory, Ben-Victor’s casting as Antaan tracks naturally with the kind of roles that have defined his career. Whether Antaan turns out to be an entirely original creation or a reimagined version of an established DC villain, Ben-Victor’s decades of experience bringing intimidating, layered characters to life makes him a fitting choice to anchor this particular corner of “Lanterns'” expanding cosmic mystery.

With “Lanterns” continuing its weekly rollout on HBO and HBO Max, Antaan’s role in the unfolding Manhunter storyline is likely to grow even more significant as the season progresses.
