Reed Richards Stretches Into the Spotlight: New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Promo Shows Mister Fantastic’s Elastic First Pitch

Some of Marvel’s most memorable marketing moments are the silliest ones. A ballpark, a ceremonial first pitch and a hero whose body bends like rubber make for an image that needs no explanation. And when that hero is about to share a screen with Doctor Doom, even a lighthearted shot becomes a piece of the puzzle.

That’s the context for the newest ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ look, which arrived through a special preview aired during Game 1 of the World Series. The one-minute spot mixed new footage with real baseball players, and it has been circulating ever since.

The new Reed Richards look from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ shows Mister Fantastic’s powers on full display at a packed ballpark. A pitcher in a blue uniform whips an impossibly long arm toward home plate, with bunting draped across the stands, while a mustached man in a Brooklyn cap and a Fantastic Four sweater stares upward in the foreground. It’s a playful image that captures exactly what makes the character so visually distinctive.

The scene takes place at Ebbets Field on Earth-828, the Fantastic Four’s home universe, which fans first visited in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ The words ‘Earth: 828’ appear on screen, and a Dodgers ‘World Champs’ banner hangs over the stadium. In our world, Ebbets Field was torn down in 1960, but on the Fantastic Four’s Earth it’s still packed.

Reed wears a blue uniform with the number 4 and a Brooklyn cap, and the Thing appears nearby in a Brooklyn cap of his own. Fans in the stands wave a sign that reads ‘Four Heroes, One Historic Field.’ The details give the scene a warm, retro-futuristic charm.

The cap isn’t just decoration. It implies the Dodgers never left Brooklyn in this alternate reality, a small worldbuilding touch that fits the 1960s-inspired aesthetic of the Fantastic Four’s universe. One baseball outlet also noted that Steve Rogers woke up to a Brooklyn Dodgers game on the radio in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ which gives the cap a nice thematic echo.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduced a reality where the Avengers never existed. Seeing that world cross over with the wider MCU is part of what makes the film’s premise so intriguing.

Ant-Man’s Captain America Slip in the New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Footage Pokes Fun at the Steve Rogers Versus Sam Wilson Debate

For the World Series version of the clip, Marvel cut 5 MLB stars into the dugout. Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, Mariners outfielder Randy Arozarena, Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, Phillies slugger Bryce Harper and Rays third baseman Junior Caminero all watch Reed’s pitch in their own uniforms. Misiorowski was also the Brewers’ starter in Game 1, so he pitched in the same game that aired his Marvel cameo.

The commentary is part of the joke. One player jokes that ceremonial first pitches keep getting bigger every year, while the broadcast booth reacts with astonishment at the length of the stretch. Another observer notes that Reed’s arm extension might be enough to get the attention of Major League scouts.

The tone doesn’t last. The preview moves from the ballpark to Avengers Tower, where a short Captain America exchange plays out, and then to new glimpses of Steve Rogers, Thor, Sam Wilson’s Avengers, the Wakandans and a hint of the returning X-Men. It ends on Doctor Doom in his hood and mask, and the Avengers logo glows green over the stadium in an earlier teaser.

That contrast is deliberate. Footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con confirmed that Doom originates from Earth-828, which means he and Reed share a home universe. Opening the preview in that world, with a joyful scene that Doom is about to ruin, sets up the stakes neatly.

Pascal has said Reed isn’t the one leading the Avengers, but the character is clearly central to the story. The trailer has already shown Reed confronting Doom, and the Fantastic Four have been positioned as a crucial part of the heroes’ alliance. A scene like the first pitch gives the audience a chance to see the family as they were before everything changed.

For fans who have wanted to see Reed’s powers used on a bigger canvas, the shot is a treat. It’s also a reminder that the Russos are willing to lean into the comic book fun alongside the doom and gloom.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens December 18, the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three.’ It’s directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and leads into ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027. With less than 2 months to go, expect Marvel to keep releasing small pieces like this one.
