Rian Johnson is not done with the world of Knives Out. At the Los Angeles premiere of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he and Daniel Craig are already thinking about what could come next for the mystery franchise.

The film marks the third entry in the series, which began in 2019 and later moved to Netflix through a two-sequel deal.

Johnson said on the red carpet that making the latest movie left him eager to keep building new stories around detective Benoit Blanc.

He explained, “Creatively, I feel energized after making this one. Daniel and I are already starting to formulate … what could the next one be if we do another one?” He also said he enjoys bringing in new casts and writing a fresh case each time. “I don’t know why I would stop doing it if we could keep making them,” he added.

Johnson said the Knives Out films are his way of exploring real issues through the lens of a mystery. The first movie touched on immigration, and this new film deals with how religion can be misused.

He mentioned a recent statement made by Catholic bishops and nuns criticizing the Trump administration’s approach to immigration.

He explained, “I was so happy to see the bishops … make that statement recently about the cruelty of how the current administration is handling immigration right now – the inhumanity of it and how that is so unchristlike.” Johnson said the topic is important to him on a human level, not just a religious one.
