Robert Downey Jr. And Tom Holland’s Playful Reunion Clip Has Fans Talking Amid Record ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Box Office Run
Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland have shared one of the more genuine friendships to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a bond that began years before either actor became a defining face of the franchise. Downey mentored Holland from his very first MCU appearance, famously advocating for the young actor’s dialogue to stay intact during his debut scene in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ a kindness Holland has said he still hopes to pay forward to someone else someday.
That relationship has continued playing out publicly as both actors’ careers have evolved in very different directions this year. Downey is preparing to return to the MCU this December, not as Iron Man but as the villainous Doctor Doom in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ while Holland has spent the summer watching his fourth solo Spider-Man film shatter box office records across the board.
That contrast made for a lighthearted moment this week when a video began circulating online showing the two actors reconnecting, with Holland teasing Downey over ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ box office success in the clip. Fans quickly picked up on the playful energy between the two, with reactions online jokingly speculating that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could sail past $3 billion given the momentum already building around Marvel’s slate this year.
That speculation isn’t entirely unfounded given how ‘Brand New Day’ has performed since its release. The film crossed $1 billion worldwide in just six days, according to Variety, making it the second-fastest movie in history to hit that mark behind only 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ It also became the fourth film of 2026 alone to cross the billion-dollar threshold, following ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,’ ‘Michael,’ and ‘Toy Story 5.’
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already pointed to ‘Brand New Day’s’ outsized success as a strong sign for what’s still ahead this year, telling Variety that the film’s performance bodes well for upcoming MCU releases and reflects what happens when a shared universe genuinely resonates with audiences. That optimism extends directly to ‘Doomsday,’ which reunites a sprawling ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, and the returning X-Men lineup alongside Downey’s new role as Doom.

The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ directing team, Joe and Anthony Russo, have also publicly acknowledged ‘Brand New Day’s’ achievement, congratulating the film’s cast and crew on Instagram after it surpassed their own record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in history with a $360 million debut. That symbolic passing of the torch, paired with Downey and Holland’s own real-life friendship, has only added to the sense that Marvel’s two biggest releases of the year are deeply intertwined heading into the holiday season.
With ‘Brand New Day’ continuing to dominate theaters and ‘Doomsday’ still building anticipation ahead of its December 18 release, both franchises appear positioned to close out 2026 as major box office events in their own right.
Whether Holland makes any kind of appearance in ‘Doomsday’ remains unconfirmed, though the film’s connections to the wider Spider-Man mythology through its post-credits scene have already fueled speculation about a potential multiversal reunion down the line.
For now, fans are simply enjoying watching two of the MCU’s most beloved stars celebrate each other’s success, a reminder that even amid record-breaking numbers and franchise-shaping announcements, the relationships behind these films remain a huge part of their appeal.
