Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth Send a Video Message to Fans From the Set of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel’s marketing machine has been running at full tilt this month, and this week it made a very deliberate stop in China. The studio has spent the better part of a year rolling out teasers, trailers, and convention appearances for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ but the tone of its messaging has recently shifted from simple hype to something closer to a warning shot aimed directly at the fandom.
The rollout began in earnest back in December with a teaser confirming Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers, followed by a Thor-focused spot the following week, then an X-Men reveal in early January, and a Wakanda and Fantastic Four teaser shortly after that. Those combined teasers eventually crossed one billion views, a milestone Robert Downey Jr himself celebrated on Instagram, calling the massive scale of the film deserving of that kind of attention.
That momentum carried straight into a new video message this week. Avengers Updates shared a clip filmed at BilibiliWorld showing Downey, Evans, and Chris Hemsworth addressing fans directly.
Downey has been pushing in recent interviews about the pressure surrounding this film. Speaking to CBR in early July, Downey described Doomsday as the antidote to Marvel’s post-Endgame slump, explaining that the way the story has been structured, along with the other characters involved, is what makes it feel different from everything that came before it. He added that the team has labored long and hard to make sure the film does not feel like a letdown following Infinity War and Endgame.
Downey acknowledged the challenge directly, comparing the difficulty of following Endgame to trying to replicate the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, saying so many unique circumstances came together at that specific time that it simply cannot be repeated. That kind of candor from the actor most synonymous with the franchise’s earlier success adds real weight to a marketing line as simple as stakes have never been higher.
The China focused messaging also reflects how much international marketing has ramped up ahead of the film’s release. Marvel Studios chose the Shanghai Expo as the site for its first real world look at physical sets and props built for the movie, giving fans there an early glimpse rather than saving everything for domestic conventions. Pairing that kind of hands on activation with a personal video message from three of the franchise’s most recognizable stars suggests Marvel sees the Chinese market as a genuine priority this time around, not an afterthought in the rollout.
Do you think ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can live up to the hype?
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and a sprawling ensemble that spans the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. The film hits theaters on December 18, and if this week’s warning to fans is any indication, the marketing team clearly wants audiences walking in expecting something bigger than anything the franchise has attempted before.
