Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Performance in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Sounds Genuinely Unlike Anything Fans Have Seen From Him According to Russo Brothers

Marvel Studios has spent the better part of a year rationing details about one of its most closely guarded performances, and fans have been left piecing together every scrap of information about how exactly Robert Downey Jr. transformed into one of the MCU’s most complex villains. With the film’s release now just months away, the studio has finally begun pulling back the curtain.

Downey’s casting as Victor Von Doom already sent shockwaves through the fandom when it was first revealed, marking a dramatic pivot for an actor whose identity has been inseparable from Iron Man for over a decade. That shock has only deepened as new details continue emerging about just how differently this performance was constructed compared to his previous MCU work.

According to the Russo Brothers, who are directing ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ Downey’s transformation into Doctor Doom involved considerably more experimentation than fans might expect. Speaking with Empire, Anthony Russo teased that there was a lot of experimental performance involved, describing the result as incredible but also unexpected, adding that what Downey brings to the role couldn’t have been predicted.

That experimental approach reportedly blended traditional acting with performance capture technology. Joe Russo explained that Downey was fully performing everything on set, and because the character is being brought to life with an additional digital layer, the filmmaking team also got a second pass at shaping his performance during post-production.

This isn’t entirely unfamiliar territory for the MCU, even if it marks a first for Downey specifically as Doctor Doom. Similar techniques have previously been used to bring other major franchise villains to life, including James Spader’s motion-capture work as Ultron and Josh Brolin’s performance as Thanos across ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Downey himself has spent considerable time developing the character well beyond just physical performance. The Russos previously described him as deeply immersed in the role, actively writing backstory details and contributing costume ideas throughout the development process, calling it the kind of rich, three-dimensional character work he’s always gravitated toward as an actor.

That level of dedication tracks with how Downey originally described his own excitement about the role when his casting was first announced during Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, delivering the now-famous line “Same mask, new task” to a stunned Hall H audience. Since then, Downey has continued teasing his approach to the character in subsequent interviews, describing the process as genuinely experimental and expressing confidence that audiences will be satisfied with the final result.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together heroes from across the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four franchises, all converging on a collision course against Downey’s villainous new character. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo from a script written by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, the film represents the directing duo’s first return to the franchise since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

With the film set to open in theaters on December 18, Marvel’s steady stream of small reveals about Downey’s performance appears designed to keep anticipation building right up until release. Given how tightly the studio has guarded actual footage of Doom in action, these behind-the-scenes details remain some of the clearest signals yet about just how differently this character will be presented compared to Downey’s previous MCU work.
