Robert Eggers is taking audiences back into the darkness with his latest horror project, Werwulf, and the first official trailer has finally arrived. The upcoming film brings together Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Lily-Rose Depp for another unsettling historical nightmare from the director behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu.

While Focus Features has not released a full plot summary yet, the film is being described with the chilling tagline: “Werwulf is a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within.” The short description already hints at a story filled with fear, family secrets, and a dark force that refuses to let go.

The new trailer immediately shows Eggers’ signature style. Shot in a grainy 4:3 format, the footage creates an old-fashioned and uncomfortable feeling, making the world of Werwulf look like something pulled from a forgotten nightmare. The trailer focuses on a family dealing with a mysterious curse, with a haunting voice warning about the evil that has followed them.

As the trailer continues, the danger becomes clearer. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s character appears to be at the center of the curse, and the final moments reveal a shocking transformation as he becomes a werewolf. The brief glimpse has already sparked excitement among horror fans who are curious to see Eggers’ unique take on the classic monster story.

Werwulf continues Eggers’ interest in historical horror. Instead of modern settings, the filmmaker once again builds a world based on the past, mixing folklore, mythology, and brutal human emotions. His previous films have explored witches, sailors, Vikings, and vampires, and now he is turning his attention toward werewolf legends.

The movie also brings Eggers back together with several actors he has worked with before. Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe previously appeared in Eggers’ Nosferatu, which became both a critical and commercial success. According to reports, Nosferatu earned around $181 million worldwide and became Eggers’ biggest box office success.

The success of Nosferatu also helped strengthen Eggers’ partnership with Focus Features. The vampire film opened with $21.6 million in its first three days and reached $40.8 million during its first five days. It later received multiple major award nominations, including recognition from the BAFTAs and the Oscars.

With Werwulf, Eggers looks ready to continue his run of visually striking and disturbing films. The project was written by Eggers and his longtime collaborator Sjón, who previously worked with him on The Northman. Focus Features is producing the film alongside Eggers and Sjón, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus from Maiden Voyage serving as executive producers.

The studio is keeping many details about the story hidden, but the trailer gives fans enough to know that another dark journey is coming. Between the mysterious curse, the impressive cast, and Eggers’ reputation for creating intense horror experiences, Werwulf is already becoming one of the most talked-about genre films on the horizon.

The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Christmas Day, continuing Eggers’ tradition of bringing unusual and ambitious horror stories to the big screen.
