Marvel fans have spent years hoping for a proper bridge between the studio’s theatrical slate and the beloved Netflix corner of the franchise. Characters like Daredevil and Kingpin have already made their way back into the main MCU timeline, fueling speculation about who else might follow.

Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, the character who quietly held together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, has long been near the top of that wish list. So when word broke that Dawson had actually filmed a scene for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ fans allowed themselves a moment of genuine excitement.

That excitement was short-lived once Dawson revealed the scene never made it into the finished film, and now she’s opened up about just how that news landed for her personally. Speaking about the experience, Dawson described the sting of having already prepared to celebrate the moment before learning it had been cut.

According to Dawson, she had everything ready to share the news with fans, right down to a heartfelt personal touch. “When I tell you my post was already ready with my BTS from the movie, with my grandson wearing all his Spider-Man stuff cuz he loves Spider-Man,” Dawson explained during a convention appearance. “Then I got the email. So yeah. No.”

The moment captures just how close Dawson came to making her Claire Temple return official on the big screen. Instead, she found herself facing another disappointing footnote in her Marvel history, only this time with an emotional family element attached to it.

What makes the moment sting even more is that it isn’t the first time Dawson has had a filmed scene left on the cutting room floor. She previously shot a cameo for ‘The Devil’s Rejects’ back in the mid-2000s, only for that appearance to be cut as well, a coincidence she seems to find darkly amusing given her latest experience.

Leaning into the parallel, Dawson joked about her growing reputation for ending up on the wrong side of the editing room. “So I’m a reject of Spider-Man and I’m a reject of the devil’s rejects,” she said, tying both experiences together with a wink.

Despite the frustration, Dawson made clear that her connection to the character and the larger universe hasn’t wavered. “Like I still love it because everybody’s in it,” she continued. “It still means that, you know, my character is somewhere in that same universe. And I really love that. So, I hope I get to be Claire again.”

Reports have since surfaced detailing what Dawson’s cut cameo actually entailed. According to insider accounts, Claire Temple was set to appear in a hospital scene where Peter Parker wakes up still wearing his mask after being accidentally shot by Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, sharing a brief, warm exchange with Claire before the story moves on.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have since addressed the cut, noting that Dawson’s scene wasn’t removed due to quality concerns but rather the demands of the film’s packed two-and-a-half-hour runtime. It’s a familiar story in blockbuster filmmaking, where even well-received scenes sometimes fall victim to pacing decisions late in the editing process.

For now, Claire Temple’s official return to the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe remains unfinished business. Given Dawson’s clear enthusiasm and the franchise’s ongoing efforts to reconnect its street-level heroes, it may only be a matter of time before she gets another shot.

Should Rosario Dawson return as Claire Temple in a future Marvel project?
