Ruben Fleischer Says the Magic in ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don’t’ Was Made Without AI
Director Ruben Fleischer says the magic in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t was made without any help from artificial intelligence.
He talked about it during an interview with Variety, and he was very clear about how the team created the illusions in the movie.
When Variety asked him about the use of AI, Fleischer said, “No, we didn’t use any AI.” He explained that the opening scene plays with the idea of deepfakes, but that doesn’t mean the production actually used the technology.
He said the characters in the story might be using AI to create holograms of the Horsemen, but behind the scenes the crew used a simple method.
According to him, the actors were filmed on a green screen and those shots were later added into the scenes by hand, which he described as “the old-fashioned way.” He added that this process “didn’t require any AI whatsoever.”
The movie itself is the third film in the Now You See Me series. It was directed by Fleischer and written by Michael Lesslie along with Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and Seth Grahame-Smith.
The film brings back Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and Morgan Freeman. It also introduces new cast members like Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, Ariana Greenblatt, and Rosamund Pike. This is also the first movie in the series without Michael Caine, who retired.
The film premiered first in the Netherlands on November 11, at the Harbour Club in Amsterdam, and then came to theaters in the United States on November 14 through Lionsgate. Critics were divided on the final result, but many felt it was stronger than the earlier movies. Reports say another sequel is already being planned.
