Ryan Coogler has shared new details about his upcoming reboot of The X-Files, and fans of the original series may feel right at home.

He talked about the project during a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he explained that the new show will follow a structure similar to the classic version.

According to Coogler, the series will balance standalone stories with a larger ongoing plot. “We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy,” he said on the podcast.

This was a key part of what made the original show popular, mixing strange one-off cases with a bigger mystery that unfolded over time.

Coogler is currently developing the reboot and has said this will be his next project after his film Sinners. He first confirmed his involvement in April, and by October, work on the series was already underway.

He also shared that the project is personal for him, explaining that his mother was a big fan of the original show, which helped push him toward taking it on.

The original The X-Files premiered on Fox in the 1990s and became a major hit. The show followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigated strange and unexplained cases.

Mulder believed in the paranormal, while Scully was a skeptic, which flipped common gender roles at the time. The series drew inspiration from older shows like The Twilight Zone, Twin Peaks, and Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson led the show for most of its run, with new characters joining in later seasons. While the show was praised for its ideas and atmosphere, some fans were critical of how the long conspiracy storyline wrapped up. Still, the series became a major part of pop culture, known for its focus on government mistrust, conspiracy theories, and the unknown.

By the time it ended, The X-Files had become the longest-running science fiction series in American television history. It also expanded into movies, spin-offs, and merchandise. With Coogler now leading a new version, and with confirmation that classic elements will return, the reboot is shaping up to be a modern take that still respects what made the original so memorable.
