Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ Reimagining Is Officially Heading to Hulu as a Full Series

Few franchises have inspired as much “I want to believe” devotion as ‘The X-Files‘. Since it ended, fans have asked whether anyone could capture its mix of paranoia, mystery and monster-of-the-week thrills again. Now one of Hollywood’s most in-demand filmmakers has an answer, and it is official.

Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ reimagining to series, announcing the news on Tuesday. The show stars Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, with a supporting cast that includes Steve Buscemi and Amy Madigan. It comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television.

The order follows Hulu’s pilot pickup in February, and it arrives while Coogler is riding a major career high after the four-Oscar success of ‘Sinners’. It also caps a project that has been in the works for years, giving ‘X-Files’ fans a concrete reason to celebrate.

Hulu describes the show as a reimagining of the classic, following 2 highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond. They are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena. That setup echoes the spirit of the original while leaving room for a new dynamic.

Importantly, Deadwyler and Patel are not stepping into the roles of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. According to reports, they play entirely new characters, though they remain in the FBI. It is not yet clear whether the pair will follow the same believer-and-skeptic template or find a different dynamic.

Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot through his company Proximity Media. The pilot was shot by Autumn Durald Arkapaw, his Oscar-winning cinematographer from ‘Sinners’. Jennifer Yale serves as showrunner and executive producer.

Executive producers also include Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media, along with original series creator Chris Carter, who is a non-writing executive producer. Co-executive producers are Simone Harris, Deadwyler and Patel. In his statement, Coogler said what Carter created is special, and that the team wanted to honor what made the original connect with so many people while finding its own way into that world.

The series order caps a journey of more than 3 years, according to Deadline, and the project falls under Coogler’s 5-year exclusive television deal with Disney, the parent company of Hulu, 20th Television and Onyx. The idea first surfaced in 2023, when Carter revealed that Coogler had contacted him about rebooting the series with a diverse cast. Little official news followed until the pilot order this year.

The wait has built anticipation, and the cast reflects that. The pilot filmed in Vancouver, the same city where the original series shot its early seasons, a fitting nod for a show steeped in atmosphere.

Deadwyler is known for ‘The Harder They Fall’, ‘Till’ and ‘The Piano Lesson’, along with television roles in shows such as ‘Station Eleven’. Patel, an Emmy nominee, is known for ‘EastEnders’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Station Eleven’ and a supporting role in ‘The Odyssey’. The 2 previously appeared together in ‘Station Eleven’, which gives them an existing rapport.

Amy Madigan and Steve Buscemi joined as supporting players, along with Ben Foster, in guest roles. Madigan is a recent Oscar winner, and Buscemi’s credits include ‘Boardwalk Empire’. That level of talent suggests the show is aiming high.

One lingering question is whether Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny or other original cast members will appear. The synopsis implies the series takes place after the original show, which leaves the door open. Rumors have circulated that the original leads could return in some fashion, but nothing has been confirmed.

For now, it is best to treat that as speculation. The new show appears designed to stand on its own, with new characters and a fresh perspective. Whether it ultimately connects to the older series remains to be seen.

There is no premiere date yet, and Hulu has not announced an episode count. Some commentators have guessed that the show could arrive in fall 2027, in time for spooky season, though that is not official. The series will stream on Hulu, including on Hulu on Disney+.

Coogler has said that after he finishes ‘The X-Files’, he plans to shoot ‘Black Panther 3’, which is rumored to be aimed at a summer 2028 release. That means his focus is likely to stay on the series for now. For fans, the key takeaway is simple: the truth is, once again, out there.
