Speaking to reporters, Gosling reflected on the challenges of playing Ryland Grace, a man stranded alone in space. “This role required me to go to some very quiet, solitary places within myself to truly understand Ryland’s isolation,” he said. He added, “It is a story about the absolute best of humanity and the lengths we will go to when everything is on the line.”
Project Hail Mary tells the story of Ryland Grace, a middle-school teacher turned astronaut who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. He discovers he is the last hope to save the sun from an extinction-level threat.
The film also stars Sandra Hüller as mission lead Eva Stratt, alongside Ken Leung, Milana Vayntrub, and James Ortiz, who provides the voice and puppetry for the alien character Rocky. Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed the movie, which is expected to be one of the year’s top box office hits.
