Ryan Reynolds Finally Breaks His Silence on That Infamous Thor Crying Mystery from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Few moments from 2024’s superhero slate have aged into quite as persistent a meme as the tearful cameo tucked into ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ What started as a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it gag involving repurposed footage has somehow become one of the most enduring mysteries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, refusing to fade even a year after the film left theaters.

The scene in question shows Deadpool being shown a TVA monitor featuring Thor cradling his battered body while visibly crying, footage that was actually lifted from 2013’s ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and digitally altered to swap Tom Hiddleston’s Loki for Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson. Mr. Paradox quickly shuts down any further explanation, insisting it’s a glimpse of the “distant future,” and the film never circles back to answer the question it raises.

That unresolved thread resurfaced again this week, and this time Reynolds finally offered something closer to a real answer. Speaking on the red carpet for his new action comedy ‘Mayday,’ Reynolds addressed the ongoing fascination surrounding the moment head-on, framing it as a mystery he’s just as invested in as the fans asking about it.

Reynolds admitted that everyone, including himself, is eager for the payoff, saying, “Don’t we all want to know? Why was Thor crying? I want to know too. We will find out at some point. And I’m excited for people to find out,” according to a video shared by Screen Rant.

The comment lands as the latest chapter in what has become a running bit stretching back to the movie’s original release. Reynolds first teased the topic on social media back in 2024, cryptically writing that he knew why Thor was crying and couldn’t unknow it, a post that only intensified fan theories connecting the scene to future Avengers installments.

Even the film’s own director, Shawn Levy, has admitted he doesn’t actually know the answer, telling press shortly after release that the moment wasn’t built to set up any specific future story. That contradiction between Reynolds’ teasing and Levy’s shrug has only fueled more speculation over whether the scene was ever meant to mean anything at all.

The topic clearly hasn’t lost steam heading into 2026. At San Diego Comic-Con this past July, Reynolds crashed Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel in character as “Jeanpool,” a denim-clad take on Deadpool, and directly asked Paul Rudd where Thor was and why he had been crying, only to get a joking, evasive answer in return.

Reynolds’ latest comments arrive alongside another wave of speculation about whether Deadpool and Wolverine might factor into ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ A teaser played at D23 in August featured Hugh Jackman jokingly appealing to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to “round out the cast,” a clip Reynolds later shared with a playful caption calling it a “hostage video.”

‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which will introduce Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, is set to hit theaters on December 18, and Marvel Studios has yet to confirm whether either character will actually appear. Combined with the renewed Thor comments, fans now have two separate threads to obsess over as the countdown to the film continues.

Whether the Thor crying reveal ever actually lands in a future MCU project or remains an eternal inside joke, Reynolds seems more than happy to keep the mystery alive for now. Given how long this particular gag has stuck around, it wouldn’t be surprising if Marvel lets it simmer for a while longer before offering any real payoff.
