Sabrina Carpenter to Star and Produce Magical ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Musical for Universal

Sabrina Carpenter is set to star in and produce a new musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland for Universal Pictures. The film will mark another major project for the pop star, who is said to be personally invested in the story.

Lorene Scafaria, known for writing and directing the hit film Hustlers, has been hired to write and direct the movie.

The production team includes Marc Platt, the producer behind both Broadway and film versions of Wicked. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment, the company behind shows like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, are also on board as producers.

Sources report that Carpenter approached Universal about a year ago with her own ideas and a lookbook for the project. As the concept developed, Scafaria and the other producers joined to help shape the film.

Universal Pictures is overseeing the project with senior vice president of production development Ryan Jones and director of production development Jacqueline Garell. Katie McNicol is guiding the production for Marc Platt Productions.
