Sadie Sink Is Officially Marvel’s Jean Grey, and Her ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Debut Was Just the Beginning

For an actress who spent over a year dodging questions about her most secretive role yet, Sadie Sink has had quite the summer. Between a record-breaking box office debut and now a headline-grabbing D23 announcement, the ‘Stranger Things’ star is having a moment that few young actors ever experience.

Sink’s journey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe began quietly, with a role so closely guarded that even her closest collaborators were kept in the dark. It wasn’t until ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ hit theaters that fans finally understood the full scope of what she’d been hiding.

Now that secret has evolved into something much bigger. Marvel Studios confirmed at D23 that Sadie Sink will officially return as Jean Grey in the studio’s upcoming ‘X-Men‘ reboot, extending her mutant storyline well beyond her surprise introduction earlier this summer.

“It is so wonderful to be here and to finally be able to talk about this character after months of speculation,” Sink told the crowd during the D23 panel, before welcoming her new co-stars to the stage. It was a fitting moment for an actress who spent over a year keeping her casting under wraps, even from friends and family.

Sink’s road to Jean Grey wasn’t a simple one. Speaking about her ‘Brand New Day’ casting process, she revealed that Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito personally called her to offer the part, despite her initially knowing very little about the character beforehand.

That unfamiliarity didn’t last long. Sink told Variety that once she began researching Jean Grey, saying yes became a “no-brainer,” drawn to the character’s status as one of the most iconic figures in X-Men history and eager to bring her own interpretation to life.

What made Sink’s take on Jean particularly compelling was the emotional groundwork laid in ‘Brand New Day’. Sink described Jean as “very flawed,” noting that while the character doesn’t want to cause harm, she herself has been deeply hurt, and that experience shapes everything she does. That backstory, tied to the loss of Jean’s sister and a devastating reveal involving the mysterious “V-Max” clue, gave the character an emotional foundation heading into the ensemble film.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has since crossed $500 million at the North American box office, a milestone that arrived in record time and only intensified interest in Sink’s future as Jean Grey. With that pressure now behind her, Sink appears ready to carry the character into Marvel’s next chapter.

Sink is joined in the new ‘X-Men’ film by Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver rounding out the cast as the villain Mister Sinister. Director Jake Schreier, known for helming ‘Thunderbolts*’, will lead the ensemble into production.

Sink has admitted she hasn’t yet met all of her new castmates, but her excitement for what’s ahead is evident. She’s spoken about how the “flawed” nature of X-Men characters, mutants who often have to reckon with powers they never asked for, is exactly what makes the source material so compelling to explore on screen.

With ‘X-Men’ now set for a May 5, 2028 release, fans have a long road ahead before seeing Sink’s Jean Grey fully realized alongside the rest of the mutant roster.
