‘Sanford and Son’ Fan Favorite Demond Wilson Dead at 79, Cause of Death Confirmed

Demond Wilson, the actor many people remember as Lamont Sanford on the classic TV show Sanford and Son, has died at the age of 79.

According to TMZ, Wilson passed away Friday morning at his home in Palm Springs, California. His son, Demond Wilson Jr., said the cause of death was complications from cancer. The family did not share details about the type of cancer. Speaking to TMZ, his son said, “I loved him. He was a great man.”

Wilson became famous in the early 1970s when he was cast opposite comedian Redd Foxx on Sanford and Son. The NBC sitcom ran for six seasons and became one of the biggest shows on television. Wilson played Lamont, the responsible son who often clashed with his stubborn father, Fred Sanford. Their chemistry helped turn the show into a major hit and a lasting part of TV history.

Before Sanford and Son, Wilson caught the attention of producers after appearing on All in the Family in 1971. His performance on that show helped open the door to his breakout role. Even so, Wilson later admitted he was unsure about joining Sanford and Son at first.

In the book Black and Blue: The Redd Foxx Story, he explained his early doubts, saying, “After learning about the series format, I was doubtful about my involvement in the project. I thought about it long and hard and decided to take a chance.” He also recalled that he and Foxx did not expect the show to last long, adding, “Redd and I thought we could grab some quick cash, plus notoriety, then move on to the next project.”

The series premiered in January 1972 and quickly climbed the ratings. It aired on Friday nights and regularly beat other popular shows of the time. During its run, it ranked among the top programs on television and stayed strong for several years.

When Redd Foxx briefly left the show in the mid-1970s over contract issues, Wilson remained and helped keep the series going. Foxx later returned but eventually left for good to pursue other projects. After Sanford and Son ended, Wilson chose not to continue the show on his own.

He later starred in the CBS sitcom Baby… I’m Back, where he played a man who returns to his family after years away. The show lasted only one season. Wilson also appeared in The New Odd Couple in the early 1980s and took on film roles later in his career, including the 1993 movie Me and the Kid.

Wilson may not have stayed in the spotlight as much in later years, but his work on Sanford and Son remained widely loved. For many viewers, he will always be remembered as a key part of one of television’s most iconic comedy duos.
